The MET has announced its new exhibit for the annual event following backlash over original John Galliano theme.

What do we love about A Streetcar Named Desire, Jane Birkin, and “Carmy” from The Bear? The blank canvases of their white T-shirts and blue jeans act as purified vehicles of attitude, in which plainness actually amplifies individuality.
Ever since the Metropolitan Museum of Art cancelled its John Galliano exhibit back in August, the announcement of the 2027 Met Gala’s prospective new theme has garnered plenty of speculation. The Galliano theme implied that the Costume Institute had its eyes on extravagance and the heights of couture. Instead, it pivoted entirely with a new theme: “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday.”
This year’s exhibition honors the everyday garments whose simplicity allows for endless reinvention, revealing, in the<a href="https://www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/extraordinary-fashion-and-the-poetics-of-the-everyday"> museum’s own description</a>, “how the seemingly unremarkable can inspire delight, surprise, and wonder.” Among the objects of admiration are plain tanks, denim staples, and functional items like puffers and rain boots. Nothing is deemed too commonplace, with plastic arts and synthetic fabrics afforded the same consideration as long-held classics.

In conversation with <a href="https://www.vogue.com/article/the-met-gala-2027-theme-is-extraordinary-fashion-and-the-poetics-of-the-everyday">Vogue</a>, Bolton spoke about the process of reinventing the theme. Reflecting on the 2026 event, he launched an inquiry into how the body experiences clothing day-to-day, through both the rituals and unpredictabilities of life. He cites the Fall 2024 Undercover collection by Jun Takahashi as an influence; the collection itself was inspired by Wim Wenders’ 2023 film Perfect Days. The connective tissue between the British curator, Japanese designer, and German filmmaker is an appreciation for the refreshingly mundane. Each, in their own medium, is an astute observer of the ordinary, attentive to the poetry tucked into life's most familiar moments and settings.
At the exhibition, we can expect a chronology of traditionally ordinary garments, with the Costume Institute characteristically facilitating a dialogue between historical dress and contemporary design. Perhaps the white tee in all its plain glory, presented alongside designers' most thrilling reinterpretations of it. As for the red carpet, if the exhibition celebrates the expressive potential of the commonplace, we can expect this year’s attendees to take rather creative liberties with familiar shapes, whether by exploring the cultural nuances of denim across borders, the political potential of baseball caps, or satirical, high-fashion renditions of workwear. There’s no telling whether celebs will play it safe or lean towards the extraORDINARY, until the fateful Monday in May.
