<p>&nbsp;The ultimate handbag origin story became the world's most expensive sale when the original prototype&mdash;crafted for Jane Birkin in 1985 after her now-legendary chance encounter with Herm&egrave;s CEO Jean-Louis Dumas on a Paris-to-London flight&mdash;sold at Sotheby's Paris for a record-breaking $10.1 million.</p>
<p>This was no pristine collector's piece: the well-worn black Box leather bag still bears her initials "J.B.," a pair of silver nail clippers dangling from the strap, and the faded outlines of UNICEF and M&eacute;decins du Monde stickers. Featuring unique design details never replicated in later production&mdash;a fixed shoulder strap, closed metal rings, and a hybrid 35/40 silhouette&mdash;the bag had been in private hands for 25 years before its triumphant return at auction, where nine collectors engaged in a 10-minute bidding war before a private buyer in Japan claimed the prize. Crafted from semi-shiny alligator skin in an aquamarine blue, it is adorned with 10 white gold butterflies set with diamonds, sapphires, and rare Paraiba tourmalines&mdash;over 130 carats in total&mdash;plus a diamond pav&eacute; clasp.</p>
<p class="bag-body">Each of the three bags produced required over 1,000 hours of artisan work. The gem choices are deliberate: blue sapphires evoke the ocean's depths, Paraiba tourmalines channel the uncontaminated Caribbean, and diamonds illustrate the transparency of rain&mdash;a nod to the bag's core purpose of raising awareness for ocean conservation, with a portion of proceeds donated to cleaning the seas.</p>
