Print gave us something to look at. Texture gives us something to hold.

Coats swallow the body whole. Hems break into feathers. Embroidery no longer lies flat on a jacket; it climbs off of it. And somewhere in all of this, a fluffy little <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/labubu-doll-trend-bag-charm">monster charm</a> is still swinging from a <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/original-birkin-bag-sothebys-auction-paris-details">Birkin</a>. Fashion wants things you can touch, and it has wanted them for a while now.
So did texture finally push print out of the way? Not even close. Polka dots, animal print, and florals have all had enormous years, and the collections keep serving them up. Print and texture were never two separate stories. They are the same craving, and print is just the flat version of it—the one built to live on a screen. A leopard coat and a shaggy faux fur are asking for the exact same thing. One of them simply photographs better.
Think about how you actually see clothes now. A print looks identical whether it lands on a phone, a billboard, or a body, which makes it ideal for a culture that lives through its eyes. Texture does not work that way. Pile, weight, the way a coat swings when someone walks—all of it vanishes the second a garment becomes a picture.
You have to be in the room.
Fashion is one of the last things you still hold in your hands, and it has spent several seasons chasing the one sense your feed cannot deliver.

<h2 dir="ltr" style="text-align: center;">The Architecture of More</h2>

There are real reasons houses are going this way, and they are all arriving at once. Luxury has slowed down, and brands can no longer grow on price alone. Good craftsmanship and a good fit are expected now, not impressive, so a designer needs an actual point of view to sell anything. The industry also just lived through the biggest reshuffle of creative directors in recent memory, with 15 debuts across the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/spring-summer-2026-campaigns-fashion-trends-photos-looks">Spring/Summer 2026</a> calendar alone. 
<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/chanel-new-creative-director-matthieu-blazy-details">Matthieu Blazy</a> landed at Chanel, <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/jonathan-anderson-creative-director-dior-men">Jonathan Anderson</a> at Dior, <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/gucci-demna-debut-collection-photos-lookbook">Demna</a> at Gucci, and <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/bottega-veneta-creative-director-louise-trotter-2024">Louise Trotter</a> at Bottega Veneta, all within months of each other. A new director gets one show to say who they are, and nothing says it faster than a silhouette. You can see a change in shape from the back row. You cannot see a fabric weight change from anywhere.
There is a stranger reason, too. Artificial intelligence can now produce a flawless minimalist dress in seconds, and the one thing it cannot make is something that had to be touched to exist. Faced with a machine that turns out perfect restraint on command, designers have gone the other way entirely, toward mess, excess, and the obvious mark of a hand. That is a large part of why texture suddenly feels expensive.

<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/matthieu-blazy-new-shoes-chanel-heels-flats-sandals-design-signatures">Chanel</a> is the clearest example of how that looks at the highest level. For <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion-week/chanel-haute-couture-fall-winter-2026-runway-photos-see-all-the-looks-review-celebrities-front-row">Fall/Winter 2026 Haute Couture</a>, Blazy builds volume out of decoration instead of structure. Flowers erupt from tweed. Embroidery sits up off the fabric rather than lying against it, so a jacket looks like it is growing. Hems trail off into feathers. It takes an atelier and hundreds of hours to make a garment three-dimensional without padding underneath, and the result is clothing that seems alive.

<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion-week/maison-margiela-fall-winter-2026-collection-runway-photos-see-all-the-looks-review-shanghai-show-glenn-martens">Maison Margiela</a> does the opposite of both. Under <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/glenn-martens-jean-paul-gaultier-collection-spring-summer-2022-couture">Glenn Martens</a>, fabric gets knotted, roughed up, and finished in metallics that catch light without ever going soft. Nothing is added on top. Everything is done to the cloth itself, and you can see the work in the finished piece. The volume comes from wrapping and piling on rather than from a pattern.

<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion-week/tom-ford-fall-winter-2026-runway-video-paris-fashion-week-haider-ackermann">Tom Ford</a> is proof that none of this has to mean fluff. Slick leather and liquid metallic finishes deliver an entirely tactile look with almost no bulk, working through shine instead of pile. <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/cecilie-bahnsen-s-10th-anniversary-show-is-a-copenhagen-homecoming">Cecilie Bahnsen</a> goes the other way and builds volume out of air, stacking sheer layers over lamé until a dress holds real shape while weighing nothing, then grounding all of it in fleece and zip-up outerwear so it stays wearable.

<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/max-mara-resort-2027-shanghai-photos-the-max-exhibit-long-museum">Max Mara</a> barely raises its voice. Brushed wool, suede, camel, and a coat that has always been about how the cloth feels rather than how big it is. That is texture at its quietest, and it is the version most people will actually buy. Marni takes the loudest possible shortcut, throwing one oversized fluffy collar over an otherwise plain outfit and letting that be the entire look.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion-week/fendi-haute-couture-fall-winter-2026-runway-photos-see-all-the-looks-maria-grazia-chiuri-debut-front-row-celebrities">Fendi</a>, a house that spent decades reinventing what fur could do, works in length and pile and lets a long coat carry everything. <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/men/dior-mens-spring-summer-2027-collection-runway-photos-review-celebrities">Dior's menswear</a> lays a fur stole across a sharply tailored coat, so the texture reads as an addition to tailoring rather than a replacement for it.

What ties all of this together is not a look, because a <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion-week/glenn-martens-reinvents-haute-couture-with-his-debut-margiela-collection-see-all-of-the-looks">Margiela</a> surface and a <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/weekend-max-mara-trench-coats-artist-capsule-collection-photos">Max Mara</a> coat have nothing in common visually. It is a bet. Every one of these houses is investing in the parts of a garment that do not survive a photograph. A print can be screenshotted, resized, and reposted without losing a thing. Pile, weight, and movement fall apart the moment they leave the room. 
That is a smart place for luxury to be standing right now, and it is not a decision a house can reverse quickly, because texture and volume get settled at the pattern stage and in the mill, not in the styling. Whoever committed to this has already built their next few seasons around it.

<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/new-york-fashion-week-schedule-spring-summer-2027-cfda-calendar">New York</a> is where this gets tested next, and the calendar is full of people who work this way. The most telling appointment is <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/henry-zankov-diane-von-furstenberg-artistic-director-fashion-news">Henry Zankov</a>, who debuts as artistic director of <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/diane-von-furstenberg-henry-zankov-collection">Diane von Furstenberg</a> on Sept. 10. Zankov built his own label on knitwear, which is texture and structure in the same gesture, since a knit makes its own surface and its own shape out of stitch alone. Handing a house known for print to a knitwear designer says plenty about where the American calendar is going.
The rest of the week backs that up. <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/men/thom-browne-spring-summer-2027-mens-milan-fashion-week-photos-review">Thom Browne</a> closes on Sept. 15 with the most conceptual volume on any schedule. <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion-week/khaite-fall-winter-2026-runway-images-collection-nyfw">Khaite</a> has spent recent seasons deep in dense outerwear. Conner Ives works with reconstituted material, so texture comes out of his method whether he chases it or not. <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/carolina-herrera-spanish-jewelry-runway-looks">Carolina Herrera</a> proves that ruffles and fringe count too, hitting the same volume with no pile at all. <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/magda-butrym-new-york-store-boutique-clothes-opening-date-nyfw-schedule">Magda Butrym</a> and Sabyasachi are both new to the schedule this season, and both bring serious craft traditions with them.

New York's independents have been ahead on this for a while, and <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion-week/diotima-fall-winter-2025-review">Diotima</a> makes the best case for it. Rachel Scott has made hand-worked surface the center of her label, and her argument is that a technique with real cultural history behind it belongs in the same conversation as anything cut in Paris. That turns texture into something far more interesting than a trend.

<h2 dir="ltr" style="text-align: center;">The Fur Question</h2>

All of this runs straight into a rule change. In December, the CFDA announced that animal fur is banned at <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion-week/gen-z-most-anticipated-nyfw-shows-spring-summer-2027">New York Fashion Week</a> starting with the September 2026 shows, making this the first fur-free NYFW. The ban covers farmed and trapped fur from animals killed for their pelts, with an exception for furs sourced by Indigenous communities through traditional subsistence hunting. New York is not first here, since <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/london-fashion-week-spring-summer-2027-schedule-dates-mcqueen-designers">London</a>, <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/copenhagen-fashion-week-20th-anniversary-designers-interviews-best-street-style-runway-moments-sustainability">Copenhagen</a>, Amsterdam, Helsinki, and Melbourne all beat it to the decision, but it is the biggest circuit to commit.
The workarounds are already on the runways, and they are far more interesting than swapping one material for another. Shearling has done an enormous amount of the heavy lifting. Feathers and fringe deliver the same movement and bulk without a pelt anywhere in sight, which is how Danielle Frankel and Carolina Herrera get there. Bouclé, crochet, quilting, and heavy knit build a surface out of pure technique, no animal required—which makes handing Diane von Furstenberg to a knitwear designer look less like a hiring decision and more like a forecast.
Then there is the language problem. Faux has gotten convincing enough that nobody in the front row can tell anymore, and the industry has quietly retired the term altogether. Nobody says faux fur now.
They say fluffy. One word, no apology attached, and it stretches far enough to cover a shag coat, a feathered hem, and the little charm swinging off your bag.&nbsp;

The distance between a couture embroidery climbing off a tweed jacket and a fur collar thrown over a plain outfit is shorter than it looks. One takes an atelier and hundreds of hours. The other takes a single good coat. Both answer the same thing: a world that has given the eye everything and left the hands with nothing.
Print gave us more to look at. Texture gives us something to hold, which is harder to make and much harder to fake. Fashion figured that out first, the way it usually does.
