Saint Laurent Launches SELF 07 Art Series Around the World
Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello selected six photographers to display their take on Saint Laurent in New York, Shanghai, London, Paris, Seoul, and Tokyo.
Saint Laurent is launching its newest edition of the SELF project, an art series honoring self-expression and Saint Laurent’s unique personality through collaborations with artists, photographers, and filmmakers chosen by Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello.
For the seventh chapter of the series, Vaccarello partnered with three photographers from photographic cooperative Magnum Photos—Alex Webb, Harry Gruyaert, and Olivia Arthur—as well as three of the collective's guest photographers—Takashi Homma, Daesung Lee, and Birdhead—to showcase their work all around the globe. The artwork will be displayed in a gallery format as an external outdoor structure in Tokyo, New York, Paris, London, and Seoul, as well as a digital presentation in Shanghai.
Webb, renowned for his bright photographs will be displaying his work in New York. His work is colorful and meaningful, integrating his personal photography style into the character of Saint Laurent.
Gruyaert, who has taken vibrant photographs of settings like Morocco and India will showcase his work in Paris. Working off of the series’ central commentary on self-expression, Gruyaert delivers a bold and playful take on Saint Laurent’s core values.
Known for her astounding work as a documentary photographer, Arthur brings a fresh perspective on Saint Laurent’s central principles with an elegant photo collection. Her artwork will be displayed in her home city of London.
In addition to the three resident Magnum photographers attached to the project, three other artists were asked to lend their eyes to international installation as well. In Tokyo, Homma, a beloved photographer with a punk edge will show off his collection of photographs in a muted color scheme. Depicting visuals of the city, Homma honors Saint Laurent foundations through a new lens.
Lee, who has presented meaningful photographs all around the world, will feature his work in Seoul. Bold and eye-catching, his photos are a jaw-dropping take on the Saint Laurent personality.
Also joining Saint Laurent and Magnum on this project is the photographic collective Birdhead which will digitally present its work in Shanghai. The black and white series is both intense and striking, revealing a new interpretation of Saint Laurent values.
Displaying in the six cities from June 9 to 12, the Self 07 series reveals a new side of Saint Laurent, building off of the house’s unique and powerful character.
