L’HISTOIRE: Carrie Bradshaw's Enduring 1998 Dior Newspaper Dress
The Sex and the City character made fashion and pop culture history in the John Galliano newspaper printed dress for Dior.
L'HISTOIRE explores fashion history moments you should know, from what actors wore on a red carpet to celebrities who made cameos on the runway. Some are unsung, and some are better known. Each is part of the fabric of today’s fashion world, be it barrier breakers or culture makers.
Sex and the City gave birth to one of the biggest style icons of the 21st century, Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker. The character had the closet of every fashion enthusiast’s dream, from Manolo Blahnik heels to Fendi handbags, she had it all, courtesy of costuming by Patricia Field. One of Carrie's most memorable fashion moments came when she stepped out of her New York apartment wearing a Christian Dior newspaper dress.
The design debuted at the Christian Dior Fall/Winter 2000 show, when John Galliano was creative director. Two versions of the dress graced the runway during Paris Fashion Week: One design was a longer gown only seen on the runway, making it a rare archival piece. The second design is the body-hugging silhouette worn by Carrie in the series. Since Carrie brought the design to the forefront of the fashion scene, many have sought to emulate her style and get their hands on the timeless piece.
The unforgettable scene in Season 3 of the series made an impression on fashion connoisseurs, and it even made a special appearance in the spin-off sequel film in 2010, Sex and the City 2. Emily Ratajkowski recreated Carrie’s iconic look when wearing the newspaper-printed dress from Galliano's Dior to New York Fashion Week in 2022. She debuted another inspired look through Miaou's Karina dress in 2023.
Carrie’s fabulous fashion sense will never go out of style and you can also recreate her most memorable outfit and feel like you’re walking the streets of New York. You can’t go wrong with the same dress EmRata wore in 2023, but we also recommend putting your spin on the look. Try Desigual or Coperni's similar, graphic style with a pair of Manolo heels, a Fendi Baguette, a gold necklace, and bouncy curls.
