Skinny Jeans Are Dead: Denim Trends of Old Are Taking Over
Pre-Y2K denim silhouettes are dominating fashion, here's how to wear them.
The year 2021 said goodbye to a lot of unlikable things, including skinny jeans. Perhaps it was the months spent in cozy sweatpants, or perhaps women are just tired of pulling at their waistband every five seconds. Either way, teens on TikTok and recent designer denim offerings agree: skinny jeans are out. In their place, a variety of overwhelmingly looser fitting and retro-inspired styles are taking over.
Like many other Y2K fashion trends, baggy pants first took hold in the 2000s, but some of these styles pre-date Avril Lavigne and NSYNC. The 1970s and 1990s are plain as day in the denim silhouettes of 2021. Designer mood boards must have been filled with images of rap stars and hippies. Whether or not you personally find yourself inspired by those eras is another conversation, but it’s likely you already own an item under this influence. And as more and more vaccines roll out and workplaces transition to IRL again, you might want more than just one pair of non-skinny and en vogue denim. Here, L’OFFICIEL rounds up your potential options.
