What <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/best-gossip-girl-fashion-moments-blair-waldorf-serena-van-der-woodsen">Gossip Girl </a>was to the fashion world between 2007 and 2012, The Shards could become for 2026: a weekly case study in how clothes stage hierarchy, longing, and personal mythology—only this time, beneath the merciless Los Angeles sun.
Set during the summer of '81, FX’s The Shards adapts Bret Easton Ellis’s 2023 semi-autobiographical novel into a coming-of-age thriller. The series follows a fictionalized teenage Ellis, played by Igby Rigney, as a new student enters his privileged Los Angeles prep-school orbit amid the threat of a serial killer. The premise is as much about surveillance and social performance as it is about violence; fashion becomes the first language its characters use to establish who they are, what they own, and what they wish to be.
Murphy has long mined the past through exacting wardrobe references. Similar to another of Murphy’s ' 80s-style masterpieces, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, The Shards avoids fluorescent leotards used as instant period signals, indiscriminate shoulder pads, and any easy visual shorthand for “retro.” Costume designer and co-executive producer Lou Eyrich, alongside costume designer Josh Marsh, built the show around a transitional palette that sits between the late 1970s and the decade still arriving with mauves, gray-blues, muted tones, and strategic bursts of color like red.

Eyrich and Marsh reportedly used American Gigolo as a primary visual reference while approaching the younger characters through recognizable archetypes: the perfect class president, the jock, the provocateur, and the new-wave outsider.

The students of The Shards are rich, restless, and exquisitely aware of one another. Their wardrobes don’t attempt to announce wealth through flashy symbols or logos; they make it appear effortlessly. The effect is distinctly Californian: polished but not overly formal and preppy but not necessarily Ivy League. Instinctive rather than overly styled: a powder-blue Ralph Lauren shirt with its embroidered pony logo, an undone button beneath a crisp collar, or a mother and daughter preparing for a night out in clear lucite heels and coordinating pink pastel chiffon and silk nightgowns looks unconsidered, even when doing considerable social work.

LA is full of carefully coiffed hair, white interiors interrupted by pops of color, silk blouses, luxury cars, and a chillingly beautiful sense of control. Production designer Cat Smith has described Murphy’s aesthetic as one of glamour and high style.&nbsp;
Kaia Gerber’s Susan Reynolds, described by the costume team as an elegant Brooke Shields-type, embodies the era’s studied innocence: composed, intelligent, affluent, and visibly protected by polish. Meanwhile, Wes Bentley’s producer Terry Schaffer channels a more permissive adult masculinity through leather jackets and open silk shirting. His look was inspired by Lindsey Buckingham. These references locate each character in a precise economy of age and status.&nbsp;
Across the two episodes released so far, denim and cigarettes, two enduring American staples, bring a relaxed ease to silk, leather, and polished prep pieces, keeping the wardrobe youthful without sacrificing its richness. The show’s early styling includes references to CK jeans alongside Ralph Lauren tailoring and Gucci loafers.&nbsp;

<h2 style="text-align: center;">The Power of a Good Pair</h2>

The first episode also makes a persuasive argument for eyewear as one of the series’ most expressive accessories. Two standout pairs, the Ray-Ban Clubmaster and vintage Christian Dior 2125A 70, work less as nostalgic product placement than as shields. They block the sun, yes, but they also hide the shifting eyes of teenagers who are constantly watching and being watched.
The ‘86 released Clubmaster’s famous browline silhouette carries an intellectual, slightly withholding quality; it reads as more controlled than carefree. The style became closely associated with 1980s fashion after the shape’s reintroduction during the decade. Here, that historical ambiguity is useful. The glasses look both inherited and newly claimed, which is appropriate for teenagers playing at maturity in a city built on reinvention.
The Christian Dior 2125A 70, identified by vintage retailers as a yellow-frame model with gradient lenses, takes the opposite approach: overt glamour with a slightly unreal finish. Its yellow gradient frame resembles a faint sunrise—the kind that arrives after a night of bad decisions, no sleep, and too much information withheld. Against the show’s soft, restrained palette, the pair becomes a flash of artificial optimism.

Though the show premiered only on August 5, social feeds are already filling with fancams, an <a href="https://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/the-shards/the-shards-guide">official style guide</a>, and outfit screenshots. The Shards may be a thriller, but its wardrobe understands a deeper truth about adolescence: getting dressed is often an early act of self-invention.
In Murphy’s 1981 Los Angeles, the most polished look is never just a look. With seven episodes remaining and an unknown serial killer on the loose, the 80's outfits may prove to be the best alibi.
