Blue Ivy and Beyoncé will Play Mother and Daughter In 'The Lion King' Sequel
The new live-action film released a teaser trailer and will be in theaters on December 20.
The Lion King will get a live-action prequel detailing Mufasa's back story, and notably, there are some familiar names in the cast. The upcoming film, titled Mufasa: The Lion King, has Beyoncé reprising her role as Nala, while her daughter, Blue Ivy, will play Kiara, the daughter of King Simba and Queen Nala. Donald Glover will also be reprising his role as Mufasa.
Moonlight director Barry Jenkins will helm the film's direction and will explore the backstory and origins of Mufasa, the king of pride in the original film and father of Simba. The film will detail the relationship he had with his brother, Scar, who, as many remember, was the villain of Disney's original The Lion King and its live-action 2019 version. Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. are set to voice young Mufasa and Scar in the upcoming film. Pierre will be joining the distinguished list of those who have previously voiced the beloved character, including James Earl Jones, who voiced Mufasa in the original 1994 version, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, who played the role in the 2019 film.
The official summary of the film reads: “Simba, having become king of the Pride Lands, is determined for his cub to follow in his paw prints while the origins of his late father Mufasa are explored.”
The trailer for the film debuted on Good Morning America and includes a voiceover soundbite that says, "This story begins far beyond the mountains and the shadows, on the other side of the light. A lion was born without a drop of nobility in his blood. A lion who would change our lives forever."
Other cast members of 2019's The Lion King who will be reprising their roles are Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Billy Eichner as Timon.
The significance of Blue Ivy's role as Kiara in the film is yet to be disclosed or revealed, so we'll have to wait for more teasers and information as it gets closer to the release date.
