What to Expect for 'Bridgerton' Season 2
Audiences devoured the first season of Bridgerton, which debuted on Christmas Day last December. The series holds the record for the most-viewed show in Netflix history, with 82 million people watching within its first 28 days on the streaming platform. A modern and intriguing story about relationships, family, and high society set within the rigid social customs of early 19th century London, Bridgerton is narrated by Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews) who is comparable to a Regency-era Gossip Girl, and features L'OFFICIEL star Phoebe Dynevor as Daphne Bridgerton and Regé-Jean Page as her love interest, the Duke of Hastings.
The eight-episode first season is full of enough longing stares, illicit relationships, and empire-style fashion to satisfy the cravings of anyone who loves a good period drama. In fact, Bridgerton is so captivating that it's become a real addiction that we can't live without. Luckily, the Shondaland-produced series will be coming back soon. The news was announced on Instagram, sharing a letter from Lady Whistledown's society paper that says filming for Season 2 will begin in spring 2021.
So far, we know that Bridgerton's upcoming season will be based on the second novel, The Viscoount Who Loved Me, in the Julia Quinn saga from which the series is based. The first season, based on the first novel of the saga, The Duke and I, showed us the world from the point of view of Daphne, the pinnacle of the good girls of London high society, who meets the Simon Bassett, Duke of Hastings, a bachelor with an impenetrable heart. The relationship between Daphne and the Duke begins as a fake relationship in a shrewd ploy to give their families what they want, but soon genuine feelings complicate the story.
The second season will have a different protagonist, Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey), the eldest Bridgerton son and brother of Daphne, who struggles to fill his role as the head of the family after the untimely death of his father. After a stormy relationship with the actress Siena in the first season (an impossible love given their differences in societal rank), the viscount now decides to marry once and for all, so as to be able to pass his title to a male heir.
Anthony seems more determined than ever in completing this task and has very clear ideas about it: love and marriage will remain two very different things. After a meticulous and careful selection of candidates, the choice falls on the favorite of the season, Edwina Sheffield. There is just one small problem: the young woman has made it clear that she will not marry without the approval of her older sister, Kate. Anthony tries in every way to please the girl, even inviting the two sisters to the Bridgertons' country residence to introduce them to the family. From there, drama ensues. The names of the actresses who will play Edwina and Kate have not yet been revealed.
And don't worry, while Bridgerton Season 2 will follow Anthony's love story, fans can still expect to see Daphne and the handsome Duke, as well as the other characters we got to know in the first season.
