It's not just classic horror tales that are having a moment&mdash;it's Mary Shelley's iconic 1818 gothic novel, Frankenstein, that's captivating audiences and filmmakers alike these days. Between Maggie Gyllenhaal's upcoming Bride of Frankenstein adaptation set in 1930s Chicago and last year's Lisa Frankenstein, an '80s <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/penn-badgley-and-meghann-fahy-you-deserve-each-other-movie-release-date-plot-instagram" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rom-com</a> twist on the classic novel starring Kathryn Newton and <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/art/cole-sprouse-actor-new-photography-exhibition-interview" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cole Sprouse</a>, it seems the Frankenstein renaissance is more alive than ever before.&nbsp;
Guillermo del Toro's upcoming movie, Frankenstein,&nbsp;has been in the making for decades. The legendary filmmaker has reportedly been eager to adapt Shelley's novel since 2007.&nbsp;
&ldquo;So,&nbsp;Frankenstein to me is the pinnacle of everything, and part of me wants to do a version of it, part of me has for more than 25 years chickened out of making it. I dream of creating the greatest&nbsp;Frankenstein ever, but then if you make it, you&rsquo;ve made it. Whether it&rsquo;s great or not, it&rsquo;s done. You cannot dream about it anymore," del Toro explained to <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200729185118/https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/guillermo-del-toro-on-frankenstein-pinocchio-the-strain-more-at-fantasia-fest/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Den of Geek</a> back in 2016. "That&rsquo;s the tragedy of a filmmaker. You can dream of something but once you&rsquo;ve made it, you&rsquo;ve made it. That&rsquo;s it. You landed a 10 or you landed a 6.5 but you were at the Olympics already, and you were judged."
Del Toro's ultimate passion project has been in the production planning process since 2008, and has bounced around various companies, but in 2023, it finally found a home with <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/netflix-tudum-2025-stranger-things-season-5-trailer-release-date" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Netflix</a>.&nbsp;

While the production process has had a few twists and turns along the way,&nbsp;Frankenstein&nbsp;is finally bound for the big screen this fall. After several high-profile role reshufflings, the Frankenstein cast was finally locked in, just in time for months-long filming in 2024.&nbsp;
Golden Globe winner <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/pop-culture/jessica-chastain-oscar-isaac-red-carpet-viral-moment-scenes-from-a-marriage" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Oscar Isaac</a>&mdash;known for his roles in Dune, Inside Llewyn Davis, Ex Machina,&nbsp;and the Star Wars&nbsp;sequels&mdash;will take on a leading role as the mad scientist himself, Victor Frankenstein. Production stills and behind-the-scenes shots see Isaac clad in period-accurate ruffled shirts and ornate vests, sporting long, voluminous curls and mutton chops&mdash;prominent enough to rival Matthew Macfadyen's as the beloved Mr. Darcy in <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/keira-knightley-period-drama-historical-films-pride-and-prejudice" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pride and Prejudice</a> (2005).&nbsp;

Though the role of the Creature has been attributed to several stars over the years, including Benedict Cumberbatch and <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/pop-culture/who-is-monica-barbaro-andrew-garfield-girlfriend-wimbledon-2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Andrew Garfield</a>, it ultimately went to <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/pop-culture/jacob-elordi-olivia-jade-breakup-news-celebrity-couple" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jacob Elordi</a>. Elordi reportedly took on the iconic character after Garfield dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. The Aussie actor is well-known for his portrayal of numerous on-screen 'bad boy' roles&mdash;think Euphoria's Nate Jacobs,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/saltburn-first-look-details-emerald-fennell-barry-keoghan-jacob-elordi-rosamund-pike" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Saltburn's</a> Felix Catton, and The Kissing Booth's Noah Flynn&mdash;but his look in Frankenstein certainly sees a different, more spine-chilling side of him.&nbsp;
Pearl star <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/mia-goth-maxxxine-trailer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mia Goth</a> plays Victor Frankenstein's doomed fianc&eacute;e, Elizabeth, while&nbsp;Game of Thrones&nbsp;alum Charles Dance takes on the role of Victor's father.
Meanwhile, Ralph Ineson, Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Sofia Galasso, Lauren Collins, and Burn Gorman make up the rest of the cast.&nbsp;

Per the film's tagline revealed earlier this summer,&nbsp;Frankenstein (2025) will likely stay faithful to the source material's plot, especially considering del Toro's reverence for Shelley's original novel. In other words, it will center around Victor Frankenstein, an ingenious young scientist, and the ensuing chaos that comes from his experiments&mdash;aka, the Creature.
However, del Toro has been vocal about the nature of the film. At <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/everything-to-know-cannes-film-festival-2025-celebrities-movies-palme-d-or" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cannes Film Festival</a> earlier in 2025, he revealed that Frankenstein would not be a <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/amy-madigan-weapons-movie-cast-plot-review-zach-cregger" target="_blank" rel="noopener">horror</a> movie.
&ldquo;Somebody asked me the other day, does it have really scary scenes?&rdquo; del Toro said at the festival, speaking publicly alongside composer Alexandre Desplat. &ldquo;For the first time, I considered that. It&rsquo;s an emotional story for me. It&rsquo;s as personal as anything. I&rsquo;m asking a question about being a father, being a son&hellip; I&rsquo;m not doing a horror movie &mdash; ever. I&rsquo;m not trying to do that.&rdquo;

Frankenstein&nbsp;Release Date

After the first teaser trailer was unveiled earlier in the summer, Netflix has now released a new official trailer, narrated by Elordi's character, the Creature. "My maker told his tale, and I will tell you mine," he says at the beginning of the clip. Throughout the trailer, we are yet to see Elordi's character in full light, egging on fans for the release. As it stands, Frankenstein&nbsp;is slated for a limited theatrical release starting Oct. 17, 2025.
The entertainment giant has not released any details on the scope of the release, but the film is expected to land on the Netflix site on Nov. 7, 2025 for streaming.&nbsp;
