All the Highlights From the 2022 Grammy Awards
Music's biggest night saw powerful political statements, deserving wins, star-studded performances, and stylish ensembles on the red carpet. Take a look at all the highlights of the 64th Annual Grammy Awards here.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Moving Speech
This is a modal window.
Before John Legend performed a moving tribute to Ukraine with his new song "Free," accompanied by Ukrainian performers like Siuzanna Iglidan, Mika Newton, and Lyuba Yakimchuk, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took to the stage (virtually) to give a powerful speech about the country's ongoing crisis with Russia.
“The war. What’s more opposite to music? The silence of ruined cities and killed people," he starts. "Our children draw swooping rockets, not shooting stars. Over 400 children have been injured and 153 children died, and we will never see them drawing."
Referencing the night of music, he went on to say: "Our musicians wear body armor instead of tuxedos. They sing to the wounded in hospitals — even to those who can’t hear them, but the music will break through anyway. We defend our freedom to live, to love, to sound."
Big Winners of the Night
The night saw many artists fighting it out for the most coveted awards in music history, but ultimately, musicians Silk Sonic (consisting of Bruno Mars and Anderson.Paak), Doja Cat, SZA, St. Vincent, Jon Batiste, and Olivia Rodrigo came out victorious.
Silk Sonic took home the Record of the Year and Song of the Year awards for their song "Leave the Door Open," beating ABBA, Rodrigo, Justin Bieber, Doja Cat and SZA, and Jon Batiste in their categories. "We're really trying our hardest to remain humble at this point," said Paak during his speech. "But in the industry, we call that a clean sweep."
Doja Cat and SZA also won in their category as Best Pop Duo for their catchy song 'Kiss Me More'. "I have never taken such a fast piss in my whole life," said an emotional Doja Cat as she rushed back to accept her award. "I'm glad you made it back in time," added an injured SZA whilst holding onto her crutches on stage."
With a whopping 11 nominations in total at this year's Grammys, Batiste walked away with—a still-impressive—five, including one of the biggest awards of the event: Album of the Year. During his speech, Batiste considered music as "more than entertainment for me – it's a spiritual practice, also leaving viewers with positive affirmations following his win: "Be You. That's it. I love you even if I don't know you."
As for the most deserving winner of the night in our opinion, alternative indie rock artist St. Vincent picked up her third Grammy this year for Best Alternative Music Album. The Daddy's Home musician won over Fleet Foxes, Halsey, Japanese Breakfast, and Arlo Parks.
Lastly, music newcomer Rodrigo took home three Grammys for her popular album Sour. The 19-year-old won Best New Artist, Best Pop Solo Performance for "Driver's License," and Best Pop Vocal Album. "This is my biggest dream come true," said Rodrigo while accepting the award for Best Pop Vocal Album.
Best Red Carpet Looks
Artists BTS, Bieber, Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, Dua Lipa, and Bomba Estereo turned out the night's most stylish looks on the red carpet. Notable mentions of the list include BTS opting for matching suits, Eilish sticking with her all-black oversized gown ensemble just like she did at the Oscars a week ago, and Gaga keeping things classy with an off-shoulder black and white gown elevated with a neat updo and statement jewelry.
Notable Performers
Viewers and guests were treated to some of music's most popular anthems of last year with performances by Gaga, Eilish, Batiste, Jack Harlow and Lil Nas X, Silk Sonic, and Rodrigo.
