Bishop Briggs’s new song "Baby," out today, felt so private to her that she was afraid to share it with the world.
“Ironically all the music I release is private,” she says, “but it never has the lightness that this track has and funnily that felt more vulnerable.” And by the way, by lightness, she means a love story that includes zombies, the apocalypse, and black magic.
The London-born singer/songwriter whose real name is Sarah Grace McLaughlin (her parents’ hometown is Bishopbriggs, Scotland) is releasing new music for the first time since dropping her debut album Church of Scars in April. The album included some of her best-known singles to date, "Wild Horses" and "River."
"Baby" is yet another display of Briggs's wide-ranging vocals layered over an immediately recognizable beat produced by John Hill (of Portugal. The Man). Lately, Briggs has begun sneaking "Baby" into her set on tour. “The crowd has been so supportive and has giggled and squealed the minute they hear the lyrics,” says Briggs. This can be attributed to the song’s candid chorus; “My baby's got a fucked up head, doesn't matter 'cause he's so damn good in bed, yeah he's still my baby, yeah he's fuckin' crazy but he's still my baby.”
After finishing up a sold-out North American tour this past year (during which she passed around a donation box, asking concertgoers to donate to GLAAD), Briggs is prepping for yet another tour kicking off next weekend and will be hitting Canada, the U.S., and Europe.
On tour, every morning "is a coffee hunt," Briggs admits. "I either go to the front of the bus for a morning brew or I seek the cutest coffee shop I can find. Cute coffee shops seem to make better coffees right? Please note that by morning I mean 1:00pm—Don’t judge me!"
"I then have a meet and greet where I get to see people who make my heart so full," she continues. "Then it’s show time where I lose myself on stage and repeatedly pinch myself that this is real life. After the show, I shower and put on a face mask–welcome to that party lifestyle."
Briggs has also been nominated for MTV Push Artist of the Year alongside SZA, Khalid, and Lil Xan at this year's MTV Video Music Awards. Until then, she hopes we can all learn a little from her latest single; "I hope the lesson that people take from 'Baby' is the importance of loving yourself before you love another person," she says. "It’s also about owning imperfections rather than hiding them from ourselves or the people we let into our lives."
