8 Bombshells From Prince Harry's New Book 'Spare'
As Prince Harry's book, Spare, releases in stores, L'OFFICIEL looks at all the major bombshells that have dropped.
After the 2021 Oprah Winfrey interview and the Harry & Meghan Netflix docuseries, we thought that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had spilled all the tea. As it turns out, there's so much more as Prince Harry's memoir Spare officially released in stores on January 10. Leading up to the release date, excerpts from the book were leaked, providing a glimpse at the unknown events that have taken place behind the palace walls and throughout Harry's life. To give a rundown on everything we have learned so far, L'OFFICIEL reveals the biggest bombshells from Harry's memoir.
Prince William and Princess Kate encouraged Prince Harry to wear a Nazi costume.
While Harry is certainly one of the most popular royals (dare we say, The People's Prince?), not even he can claim to have an unscathed history. In 2005, the Duke of Sussex made headlines after attending a party wearing a Nazi Costume. In Harry & Meghan, Harry recalls the guilt he held from that incident and the steps he took to make amends. “It was one of the biggest mistakes of my life. I felt so ashamed afterwards. All I wanted to do was make it right."
Bringing some new information to light, Harry claims that Prince William and Princess Kate not only knew about the Nazi costume but encouraged him to wear it. "I phoned Willy and Kate, asked what they thought. Nazi uniform they said," Harry wrote. After he tried on the offensive costume, he claimed, "They both howled. Worse than Willy’s leotard outfit! Way more ridiculous! Which, again, was the point."
Prince William physically assaulted his brother.
Perhaps one of the biggest buzzworthy bombshells was the physical altercation at the hand of William towards his brother. Harry wrote that William was upset about Meghan and called her “difficult,” “rude” and “abrasive." Following the account of the confrontation, the Duke of Sussex claims that William attacked him which left him with a visible injury on his back.
“It all happened so fast. So very fast. He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor,” Harry wrote. “I landed on the dog’s bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me. I lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out.”
Prince William disapproved of Prince Harry marrying Meghan Markle.
The disapproval William holds for the marriage of Harry and Markle may not come as a shock, but it has been confirmed by Harry himself. In an excerpt from his book, Harry writes that William said that their relationship "was moving too fast" and that Harry was "taking things a bit too far."
King Charles made unprovoked jabs about Prince Harry's "real dad."
For years there were constant rumors and jokes that Harry's birth father wasn't King Charles, but Princess Diana's former lover Major James Hewitt. In his book, Harry recalls Charles making constant jabs at the sentiment, though the Duke of Sussex remembers such comments being hurtful.
“Pa liked telling stories, and this was one of the best in his repertoire. He’d always end with a burst of philosophizing … Who knows if I’m really the Prince of Wales? Who knows if I’m even your real father?," Harry wrote. “He’d laugh and laugh, though it was a remarkably unfunny joke, given the rumor circulating just then that my actual father was one of Mummy’s former lovers: Major James Hewitt. One cause of this rumor was Major Hewitt’s flaming ginger hair, but another cause was sadism.”
Prince William and Prince Harry pleaded for their dad not to marry Princess Camilla.
Anyone that keeps us with the inside scoop about the royal family (or is a devout watcher of The Crown) knows about the infamous cheating scandal between Charles and Princess Camilla that lasted for years. Never forget the 1995 BBC interview in which Diana spoke about the affair: “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”
After the divorce between Diana and Charles, the current King finally wed his long-time lover. Leading up to the wedding Harry wrote “despite Willy and me urging him not to, Pa was going ahead. We pumped his hand, wished him well. No hard feelings...We recognized that he was finally going to be with the woman he loved, the woman he’d always loved."
King Charles didn't hug Prince Harry after the death of Princess Diana.
The death of Princess Diana remains one of the most tragic royal deaths to date, so we could only imagine how it must felt for her sons. In Spare, Harry states that after Diana died, his father didn't hug him at all. “Pa didn’t hug me. He wasn’t great at showing emotions under normal circumstances, how could he be expected to show them in such a crisis?” the Duke of Sussex wrote. “His hand did fall once more on my knee and he said, ‘It’s going to be OK.’ That was quite a lot for him. Fatherly, hopeful, kind. And so very untrue.”
King Charles told Prince Harry there wasn't "enough money" to support Meghan Markle.
When you become a part of the royal family it becomes your full-time job. Supporting the institution is what the royal family does day in and day out, meaning it is now up to the institution to support them financially. In his memoir, Harry wrote that Charles told him there wasn't "enough money" to support Markle (even though there was somehow enough money to support everyone else in the family).
Harry claims that Charles said this out of jealousy of Markle's growing popularity. “Pa might have dreaded the rising cost of maintaining us, but what he really couldn’t stomach was someone new dominating the monarchy, grabbing the limelight, someone shiny and new coming in and overshadowing him,” Harry wrote.
Prince Harry refers to Prince William as his "archnemesis."
In an excerpt, Harry refers to his brother as a "beloved brother and archnemesis." In a released clip from an upcoming interview between Harry and Michael Strahan, the Duke of Sussex was asked about those words. “There has always been this competition between us, weirdly,” Harry said in the interview. “I think it really plays into or is always played by the heir [and] spare [labels].” The labels that he is referring to comes from his father, in which Harry wrote after his birth, Charles told Diana “Wonderful! Now you’ve given me an heir and a spare — my work is done."
