A Timeline of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's Relationship
The couple that has occupied headlines for years, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have officially called in quits as news of their impending divorce continues to spill into the media. While neither of the two have made official statements regarding the matter, rumors backed by inside sources spread like wildfire, with no denials from the Kardashian kamp. Since the beginning of their relationship, Kimye have created an empire of music, fashion, and influence, welcoming fans into their crystallized life. However, as the dream comes to a close, L'OFFICIEL remembers the good, the bad, and the ugly by looking back on their relationship from the very beginning.
2003
Their story, which began as a friendship, dates back 18 years ago, when they met for the first time in 2003 at the recording studio. Kardashian was there as the stylist for the singer Brandy (whose brother, Ray-J, was the other half of the young socialite's infamous 2007 sex tape).
2008
In 2008, just a year after Kardashian's sex tape leaked, which catalyzed her rise to reality television fame by warranting her own show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, West asked the TV personality to appear on the show Alligator Boots (which was never released) as Princess Leia.
2010
By 2010, West was a regular guest star in the Keeping Up spin-off, Kourtney and Kim Take New York, visiting Dash (the Kardashians' clothing store) several times. Later than year, Kardashian began dating basketball player Kris Humphries, whom she was married to for only 72 days in 2011 before divorcing.
2012
In 2012, their love was made public, in a literal sense. The rapper released the song "Cold" in which he openly declared how Kardashian had bewitched him from the first moment they met ("I'll admit, I had fell in love with Kim around the same time she had fell in love with him"). She, in response, published a tweet calling herself an "enthusiastic girlfriend."
As their relationship grew, the couple also became a central phenomenon within the fashion world. At the time, Kardashian was famous for her Juicy Couture jumpsuits, Louis Vuitton maxi bags, and big sunglasses. Over time, West got closer to the wardrobe of his then-future wife by radically changing her style (enter: Kardashian's famous anecdote in which she cries for hours about West mercilessly throwing away 250 pairs of her shoes). After almost a year of dating, in December 2012, the couple announced they are expecting their first daughter.
2013
It seems like yesterday, but almost eight years ago, in May of that 2013, the couple made their entrance on the red carpet of the most coveted fashion event ever: the Met Gala. Kardashian arrived, eight months pregnant, in a Givenchy gown with her beau who was performing at the evening's festivities. Only a month later, their first daughter, North, was born.
In October, Kanye rented the entire AT&T Park in San Francisco to propose to his girlfriend with fireworks, flowers, and the whole family to celebrate. They closed the year full of events with the music video for the rapper's song "Bound 2" which features the couple quite initimately.
2014
In 2014, the couple held a large wedding in Italy. The whole family flew first to Paris for the bachelorette party, and then to Florence for the big day. Kardashian's sisters served as bridesmaids, while her mother, Kris Jenner, spent the whole ceremony trying to hold back tears. Both Kardashian and West's wedding attire were designed by Riccardo Tisci.
2015
One year after their wedding, in May 2015, the couple announced their second pregnancy. That year, with West by her side, Kardashian attended New York Fashion Week showing off her baby bump in a custom Givenchy gown. Saint West was born in December.
2016
The two A-listers had some challenges in 2016. Gossip began to circulate about them being on the verge of a divorce. Then, the "Taylor Swift scandal" exploded, dividing the world into Team Kanye and Team Swift, with Kardashian's encouraging by tweeting about the subject using the snake emoji.
In October of the same year, Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint in her hotel room during Paris Fashion Week. West received the news while performing at the Meadows Music and Arts Festival in New York, and abruptly left the stage to be by his wife's side. Only a month later, he was checked into a psychiatric hospital for a nervous breakdown.
2017
After months away from the cameras, the couple returned to announce their third pregnancy, this time via a surrogate mother.
2018
Their second daughter, Chicago, was born in January 2018, named in honor of her father's hometown. Later, photos of the Yeezy Season 5 campaign featuring Kardashian's clones exploded on social media. Members of the Kardashian family and close friends like Paris Hilton were also photographed wearing the collection on the street. The snaps were shared around the world and the entire collection sold out in record time.
As the year progressed, more rumors about a possible separation of the two circulated. West openly came out in favor of President Donald Trump, and his statements about slavery caused a scandal. He said, "if after 400 years you are still slaves, maybe it's your choice." While many thought Kardashian was ready to leave him, in late 2018, they announced another child on the way via surrogacy.
2019
Psalm West was born in May 2019. In the same month, Kardashian and West celebrated five years of marriage with an intimate ceremony renewing of their wedding vows. In her vows, the KKW Beauty mogul called West "my best friend, my greatest supporter, and my one true love."
In July of the same year, during one of his concerts, West amazed the world by announcing his intention to run for President of the United States. While his sincerity was unclear, Kardashian seemed to support him. In late 2019, the rapper also announced that he wants to found his own church after the enormous success of his Sunday Service performances.
2020
While 2020 was a devastating year for many, Kimye experienced a number of challenges unprecedented to their relationship. In January, West gave Kardashian a vintage Cartier necklace with a text from himself about her achievements, including her recent Vogue cover and her prison reform efforts, engraved on the back. Only a few months later, Forbes declares the entrepreneur a "self-made billionaire"; her husband posts a tweet proclaiming himself in ecstasy over his wife's accomplishments.
While quarantining during the coronavirus pandemic, it was reported that Kardashian is frustrated with taking care of the kids alone, as West often leaves the house for work or to go to his Wyoming ranch.
In July, after publicly announcing his candidacy for the 2020 presidential election—under the Birthday Party—and openly discussing abortion laws (also mentioning the fact that Kardashian's initial intention was to have an abortion during her first pregnancy), West launchs a series of now-deleted tweets against the Kardashian family, blaming Kim and her mother (whom he refers to as "Kris Jung-Un") for controlling him and keeping him homebound. The couple are photographed arguing outside their Wyoming property. Rumors of a rift between the two begin making the rounds, but they're mitigated by Kanye's gift for Kim's 40th birthday: a hologram of her father (who died in 2003).
2021
Less than a week into 2021, news of an "imminent divorce" for the couple hit. Page Six reported that Kardashian is already in contact with an attorney after spending months living separate lives (he in Wyoming, she in Los Angeles). While no one close to the couple has publicly spoken on the situation, shortly after the news dropped, a rumor began circulating on TikTok about an alleged affair between West and makeup guru Jeffree Star. Star denied these allegations.
In the midst of this, the Kardashian family recently filmed the series finale of Keeping Up, leading many to believe the bombshell divorce announcement was a set-up by Jenner as a cliffhanger for the show to encourage viewers to tune into their new project on Hulu.
