Who Will Be The Next Superman?

With Henry Cavill dropped from the role, three options seem likely to take on the red cape.

Henry Cavill will not be returning as Superman in the franchise’s upcoming feature film. The former Man of Steel took to Instagram to say, “It’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life.”

So why the sudden Warner Bros release? DC Studios co-head James Gunn plans to center the film around Superman’s younger years, hence 39-year-old Cavill not being particularly suitable for the role. That leaves us with one question: who will play the next Clark Kent? There has been much buzz surrounding the topic, and it seems like we might be close to the answer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn paired three hopeful heroes with potential Lois Lanes for a series of screen tests.

Now that our next Clark Kent can practically be seen coasting along the horizon, read along as L’OFFICIEL rounds up the three actors hoping to take on the red cape.

Not only does he look like a young Clark Kent, but David Corenswet also wants the job. In 2019, the actor told Entertainment Weekly that his “pie-in-the-sky ambition is definitely to play Superman.” For screen tests, James Gunn paired Corenswet with Emma Mackey, who was the only choice for Lane to be brought back in for the second series of tests in costume. Also, as evidenced by the many Reddit threads speculating about his casting for the role, Corenswet has won over DC fans' support.

Nicholas Hoult

Could Nicholas Hoult be the next Man of Steel? The actor already has experience as a comic book hero, just in another universe. He portrayed Beast, a member of the X-Men, for Marvel. Now, as the search for Superman continues, Gunn paired him with Rachel Brosnaham to test his skills as both reporter and the Man of Steel. Not only does Hoult have the looks, but he also has the acting chops: he's been nominated twice for a Golden Globe for his performance as Peter III in The Great.

As the third and final option, Tom Brittney rounds out the group of hopeful superheroes. Gunn paired Brittney with Phoebe Dynevor. While it doesn't seem like these pairings really mean anything for final decisions, the two English actors do go together nicely. Although we doubt their British accents will be coming along for the ride.
