‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ Sequel Promises Another Slice of Romance
Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez are set to reprise their roles in the upcoming film.
In 2023, the film adaptation of the best-selling book Red, White, & Royal Blue quickly became one of the year's most highly anticipated films. Titled after the young adult novel by Casey McQuiston, Red, White, & Royal Blue follows the lives of the first son of the United States, Alex Claremont-Diaz, and his enemies-to-lovers relationship with a British prince, Prince Henry. The two, being opposites in personality and living in separate continents, eventually fell for each other, and while they were careful to keep their love under wraps, complications quickly ensued when the public learned about their involvement with one another.
At the end of the film, despite an initial wave of backlash (spoiler alert), they are together and happy as Alex and Henry are seen greeting the public as a couple and then going on to celebrate President Ellen Claremont's re-election win. Well, that tied up nicely in a neat bow, right? Wrong. There's been noise about a sequel being in the works. Read on to learn more about what the Red, White, & Royal Blue sequel has in store.
Cast
For the most part, the original cast is set to reprise their roles. As you probably remember if you watched the film or simply kept up with its press, Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez, who play Prince Henry and Alex Claremont-Diaz respectively, will be reprising their roles. However, it's unclear if the rest of the cast will rejoin to play their parts in the sequel.
If you need a refresher of who played who, Uma Thurman portrays President Ellen Claremont, Alex's mother; Clifton Collins Jr. plays the role of Sen. Oscar Diaz, Alex's father; Sarah Shahi appears as Zahra, President Claremont's deputy chief of staff; Rachel Hilson stars as Nora, Alex's closest confidante; and Stephen Fry plays King James III, Henry's grandfather. It's quite the star-studded cast so there's a possibility a few may not be able to return. We will have to wait as more news about the film comes through.
Plot
The announcement is still new, so details about the movie's plot have yet to be revealed. However the producers of the first film, Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, along with the director and screenwriter for Red, White & Royal Blue Matthew López are set to work on the sequel so it's safe to say that there probably won't be any major changes to the story's progression. Additionally, in November 2023 with Out Magazine McQuiston assured that he was on board with the sequel.
“Of course, I would love to,” they told the outlet when discussing the possibility of a sequel. “I don’t think I’m allowed to say anything more than that — at this point.”
Additionally, at a recent fan event or screening, McQuiston confirmed that he and Lopez are actually writing the sequel together.
"Matthew [Lopez] and I are writing it together," McQuiston said while on a panel with Zakhar Perez and Galitzine.
"It was exciting to share the film on a big screen for its fans and to announce alongside @casey.mcquiston our plans to make a sequel. The love for our film was palpable in the room. And our love for each other was evident in our smiles," López wrote in the caption of a recent Instagram post.
