Robert Redford&rsquo;s passing on September 16, 2025, at age 89, marks the end of an era in American film.&nbsp;Born Charles Robert Redford Jr. in 1936 in California, Redford evolved into one of the defining figures of a changing Hollywood; from his early breakout roles in Barefoot in the Park, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting and All the President&rsquo;s Men, to his mature, more reflective roles in The Natural and All Is Lost.
But acting was only part of his story. As director of Ordinary People&mdash;for which he won the Academy Award for Best Director&mdash;and later Quiz Show, Redford showed he could hold a camera as compellingly as he could act in a scene.&nbsp;
His greatest legacy, many argue, lies in his work behind the scenes. The founding of the Sundance Institute and the Sundance Film Festival represented a turning point in American cinema: Redford enabled independent voices to be heard outside the main industry.&nbsp;
Outside film, Redford was an activist for environmental causes and civil rights, awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016 among many honors over his lifetime. 
He died at his home in Sundance, Utah, &ldquo;surrounded by those <a href="https://people.com/robert-redford-dead-at-89-7502405" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he loved.</a>&rdquo; L'OFFICIEL looks back at young photos of Robert Redford in honor of the legacy he has left behind.&nbsp;
