New York City has just gained its inaugural Gen-Z first lady.&nbsp;

After months of campaigning, Zohran Mamdani clinched the New York City mayoral election on Nov. 4, and alongside him comes a new first lady, Rama Duwaji.
Most recently, the couple was seen at Frank Sinatra School of Arts in Queens on Nov. 4, where they submitted their ballots. Mamdani and Duwaji's public appearances leading up to the election have New Yorkers wondering just who exactly their new first lady is.

<h2 style="text-align: center;">Who is Rama Duwaji?</h2>

Rama Duwaji, 28, is a Syrian-American illustrator and multi-media artist. Born in Houston, Duwaji moved to <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/travel-living/the-world-s-most-beautiful-hotel-to-open-in-four-years" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dubai</a> when she was 9 years old. She attended college at the Virginia Commonwealth University of the Arts in Qatar before moving back to the United States to complete her degrees in Richmond, then New York at the School of Visual Arts. While her Instagram page doesn't show much personal information, her profile does showcase her artwork and its inspirations. Duwaji's artwork often carries a strong political message.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I believe everyone has a responsibility to speak out against injustice, and art has such an ability to spread it,&rdquo; she told&nbsp;<a href="https://thisisyungmea.com/rama-duwaji-art-activism-and-the-spaces-in-between/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">YUNG&nbsp;magazine</a> earlier in 2025. &ldquo;I make my work for people who care about the things I care about.&rdquo;
Her most well-known work includes Mamdani's campaign logo and branding, featuring a distinct yellow "Zohran" with a red-drop shadow set against a Democratic blue background. The two met on Hinge in 2021, not long after he was elected to the New York State Assembly.
Duwaji has also been recognized both online and among industry icons for her sophisticated style. Earlier this fall, the artist made a splash when she sat front row at <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/diotima-lvmh-prize-finalist-rachel-scott-designer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rachel Scott</a>'s buzzy Diotima runway show during New York Fashion Week.&nbsp;
"I was intrigued by her work and personal style, so having her at the show was really exciting,&rdquo; the designer told <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/12/style/rama-duwaji-zohran-mamdani-wife.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The New York Times.</a>
Mamdani and Duwaji married in New York City Hall earlier this year. &ldquo;Rama isn&rsquo;t just my wife, she&rsquo;s an incredible artist who deserves to be known on her own terms. You can critique my views, but not my family,&rdquo; Mamdani wrote on Instagram. Though Duwaji was previously based in Brooklyn, she currently lives in Astoria, Queens, with her husband.&nbsp;
