Fleur Delesalle&rsquo;s interiors balance restraint with warmth, neoclassical references with 1970s softness, and traditional craft with sustainable materials.

Fleur Delesalle is an essential figure in interior design, whose career reflects both discipline and originality. Trained at Chelsea College of Art in London and later at ESAG Penninghen in Paris, she refined her skills during six formative years alongside the acclaimed French-Iranian designer and architect India Mahdavi before founding her own agency in 2011.
Delesalle&rsquo;s distinctive approach was shaped by an early education focused on freedom of expression and experimentation. &ldquo;At Chelsea College, I was taught not to observe or copy, but to let go&mdash;to shed inhibitions, even to the point of throwing fresh eggs against the walls and watching them drip,&rdquo; she recalls. That radical gesture taught her that design is not limited to technical mastery but also depends on inventiveness.

Her time at Penninghen sharpened her expertise: proportions, drawing, technique, and interior architecture&mdash;a discipline she describes as &ldquo;difficult but essential.&rdquo; Her experience with Mahdavi solidified her foundations and confirmed her vocation: &ldquo;Six years of incredible, inventive, rigorous training.&rdquo;
Delesalle, 45, also draws inspiration from her childhood. The daughter of a decorator who specialized in events, she grew up in a Parisian apartment bathed in light, above a canopy of chestnut trees. &ldquo;The brightness was incredible; it highlighted whites like colors,&rdquo; she recalls. That early awareness of light and framing has stayed with her.
Her influences run from neoclassical to 1970s&mdash;Jean-Michel Frank, Gae Aulenti, Pierre Paulin, and Eileen Gray. &ldquo;A curious mix that likely comes through in an approach rooted in symmetry and geometry,&rdquo; says the designer.

Since founding her Paris-based agency, Delesalle has developed a recognizable body of work in which restraint and warmth coexist. Her designs are fueled by research into materials and exceptional craftsmanship: upholstery, ceramics, wood, glass, and marble are all conceived to elevate a space. &ldquo;In France, we have extraordinary individuals working with natural materials. Their expertise allows us to push our creativity,&rdquo; says Delesalle.
Her current experiments include incorporating sustainably harvested cork, as well as innovative processes like Gw&euml;mon, a low-carbon material made from grinding and binding Breton seaweed. For Delesalle, sustainable design is not a trend, but a way of reinventing materials while reconciling aesthetics and responsibility.
The designer&rsquo;s signature is defined by confident minimalism and carefully controlled tones. Delesalle rejects the idea that restraint and color are at odds: &ldquo;Minimalism is first and foremost about refining lines and form. A shade, on the contrary, highlights and enhances the drawing. It must be used as a tool,&rdquo; she says.

Among her furniture pieces, each reflects a considered relationship between function and feeling. The Peony table, with its generous curves and pure lines, evokes a shape drawn in one continuous gesture. Presented at Paris Design Week 2021, it sold immediately.
The piece that especially draws attention is the Marigold sofa, whose 1970s-inspired design brings instant softness to a space. The Daffodils twin table set explores a different register: a modular duo reminiscent of nesting tables, playing with volume and height to create subtle movement. The organic contours soften the lines, breaking from geometric rigidity.
&ldquo;While pregnant with twins during COVID, I spent hours drawing the Daffodils twin tables while lying on the Marigold,&rdquo; Delesalle says.

The designer&rsquo;s projects include private mansions on the Left Bank, village houses in Italy, Haussmann apartments, and homes in Lausanne. In the realm of hospitality, her experience with India Mahdavi at the H&ocirc;tel du Clo&icirc;tre in Arles taught her to combine functionality, aesthetics, and identity in close collaboration with artisans. &ldquo;The architect remains the conductor of their own score, but must always listen to others,&rdquo; says Delesalle.
She has long wanted to design a hotel in Paris&mdash;a project where her sense of space and color can fully express itself. For Delesalle, the success of a project depends as much on mutual trust with the client as on technical expertise.
&ldquo;When you&rsquo;re aligned throughout the entire process and trust is reciprocal, it&rsquo;s a successful project. Interior architecture is not an exact science. Everything may be calculated on site, but unexpected challenges are numerous; you must face them with patience and determination,&rdquo; she says.
