Textures and Materials

Interior design in 2025 is embracing a bold mix of textures and materials, blending the industrial with the luxurious to create spaces that are both visually striking and tactilely rich. “High pile mohair upholstery is hot,” Los Angeles-based interior and furniture designer Ross Cassidy notes, highlighting the growing preference for materials that add a cozy yet refined touch to seating. Chicago-based multidisciplinary interior designer Kara Mann echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of durability in material selection.

“Materials that last, that hold durability. Mohair on sofas, soapstone on countertops,” Mann says. This focus on longevity ensures that interiors not only look stylish but also stand the test of time.

Texture play continues with innovative pairings. As Mann describes, “Metallics on florals, light-weight cashmere paired with worn leather—think Dries Van Noten but on your walls and windows.” This approach brings a fashion-forward sensibility to interiors, offering a mix of softness and edge. Cassidy also points to the resurgence of natural elements, saying that rattan indoors will be big, as well as tapestries being used in upholstery.

Color Trends and Lighting Preferences

In 2025, interior design is shifting towards richer, more sophisticated color palettes and a refined approach to lighting. According to Cassidy, “Shades of brown will continue to be king, but oxblood, forest, and acidic greens are all having a moment.” The trend is moving away from the once-ubiquitous all-white rooms seen in real estate listings, with homeowners now embracing deeper, earthier tones that bring warmth and character into their spaces. Mann adds that designers are exploring “a spin on jewel tones, leaning into a European saturation,” pushing the boundaries of what has traditionally been considered safe and neutral.

This embrace of deeper, more dramatic colors is complemented by a shift in lighting preferences. Oversized, statement-making chandeliers and sconces are being replaced with more understated, refined fixtures. “Bigger is no longer better,” Cassidy tells. “Smaller, more refined fixtures that impart a feeling of delicacy to a room seem to be replacing the statement, over-scaled chandelier.” Simple, thoughtfully designed lighting elements are becoming the go-to choice, offering a sleek and sophisticated touch without overwhelming the space.

Mann echoes that sentiment, emphasizing that in lighting design for 2025, “the simpler the lighting, the better. It is all about the finish and silhouette.” This focus on understated elegance allows for lighting to complement, rather than compete with, the room’s overall aesthetic.

Cabinetry Trends and Countertops

Cabinetry and countertops in 2025 are taking a more luxurious turn ahead, blending timeless craftsmanship with elevated materials that bring a sense of glamour to the kitchen.

“Burnished stainless steel is having a real comeback and onyx countertops seem to be replacing the traditional grey and white marble,” Cassidy tells L'OFFICIEL. This shift signals a move away from the understated kitchens of the past, with designers now embracing bolder, more dramatic elements that turn these functional spaces into statement areas. Cassidy adds, “Designers are finally treating kitchens as glamorous spaces and elevating the materials,” acknowledging a growing desire for kitchens that are both practical and visually captivating.

At the same time, a strong commitment remains to classic design principles that ensure longevity and durability. Mann emphasizes that cabinetry trends focus on “stained millwork, delicate profiles, durable natural stones that have been honed and leathered.” This approach brings a balance of sophistication and functionality, ensuring that while the aesthetic may lean into opulence, the foundation remains rooted in timeless, high-quality materials.

Statement Pieces Are All About the Personal Now

In 2025, statement pieces in interior design are taking on a more personal and meaningful approach, shifting away from fleeting trends to items that hold more profound significance for homeowners. Mann emphasizes the importance of selecting statement pieces that resonate on a personal level rather than simply following what’s in vogue. “We tend not to make statement pieces based on trends. Statement pieces are chosen because they are connected to the client," she explains. "They must be loved and adored or rooted in family history, they have to mean something.”

At the same time, bold, unconventional statement pieces are making their mark in homes, adding character and personality to living spaces. Cassidy notes the rise of playful and oversized elements, such as “the asymmetrical sectional, quirky upholstered statement chairs, and an over-scaled statement tree.” These pieces bring an element of surprise and whimsy, challenging traditional design norms while creating focal points that feel unique and curated.

The Living Room and Bathroom as Wellness Retreats

In 2025, living rooms and bathrooms are evolving into spaces that prioritize both comfort and luxury, with an emphasis on materials that age gracefully and designs that encourage a sense of well-being. According to Cassidy, the bathroom is no longer just a functional space but is being transformed into a true wellness retreat. “The bathroom is now viewed as a spa or wellness space, so cold plunges, infrared saunas, steam showers, and seating areas are all being integrated,” he explains. Materials such as plaster walls and Moroccan zellige tiles continue to trend, but Cassidy notes that “nothing beats vast slabs of marble,” which bring an unmatched sense of opulence and durability.

In the living room, there's a noticeable shift towards more relaxed and inviting layouts that encourage social interaction. Cassidy observes that “the asymmetrical sectional seems to have eclipsed a more formal, linear arrangement as it’s more conducive to informal entertaining.” As people look to use their living rooms more frequently, the focus has turned to seating arrangements that foster conversation and comfort rather than purely aesthetic composition.

Mann emphasizes the timeless appeal of materials that evolve over time, stating, “I will forever love a live finish, anything that patinas over time. It adds depth and soul to any space.” In both living rooms and bathrooms, there's an increasing preference for larger-scale pieces that prioritize comfort while maintaining a sophisticated edge. “Simplified shapes wrapped in luxe materials” are key, offering a balance between functionality and high-end design.

All in all 2025 interior design trends breathe new life into every aspect of the home space, whether it's through lighting in the living room, wall colors throughout the home, or tile finishes in the kitchen.
