Crystals have played a key role in spirituality in societies throughout human history because of their unique properties and aesthetic quality. And it’s no wonder: they contain vibratory frequencies that alter the energy of their surroundings. Depending on its properties, crystals can replenish the energy from a social gathering or boost creative juices when worn, carried, or positioned in particular places. Erykah Badu, Ezra Miller, and Bella Hadid are a handful of celebrities that use crystals in their everyday life, each at a different level.

The beauty of crystals is their versatility in practice. Different crystals have different properties that, in turn, have different energies. The colors of the rainbow are a simple tool to categorize crystals. Each color corresponds with one of the seven chakras and influences the energy ruled by that chakra. For example, a green crystal, like fluorite, affects the heart chakra, which deals with love, empathy, and relationships. Stones that lie in between colors impact multiple chakras. Meanwhile, black, white, and pink crystals offer blanket protection, clarity, and love. In addition, crystals have attributes that align with the twelve astrological signs. Think of crystals as a support system that feeds energy back into your life. Crystals won’t just give you love, light, or happiness by sitting on a shelf, but instead have effects similar to affirmations and talismans: they embody an intention.

It’s important to keep crystal care in mind as crystals become a part of one’s spiritual work. During use, crystals can pick up stale energy from their surroundings that can dull their effect. To recharge crystals, set them out in sunlight for a day. To cleanse them, place them under the light of the full moon.

But where to get them? Local street vendors, occult shops, and spirituality stores are great places to start. Be mindful, however, and find a comfortable place to support a vendor, a sourcing method, and an intention whenever you purchase crystals. Plus, it’s always great to receive (or give) crystals as gifts.

The best advice, however, is to take a holistic approach to crystals. Consider the stone’s properties and energies in addition to your own intentions and methodology. Perhaps a blue crystal at the workplace to foster expression and clarity, a red crystal at home for grounding, and a yellow crystal in your pocket to feel sociable. Crystals are tools, and it’s up to the individual to consciously implement such tools in their life.

To help you get started, here are seven crystals to jumpstart your collection:

Black Tourmaline
Black Tourmaline

Jet black and lustrous, this crystal is associated with the root chakra. Black tourmaline has a grounding energy that promotes mindfulness and awareness of surrounding energies. It is about inner discovery and provides a step towards healing and repelling negative energy. This is a general protection stone that wards off fear and encourages understanding. It is associated with Scorpio and acts as a kind of energy shield.

Citrine
Citrine

This crystal has a bright, warm composition that enhances joy, attracts abundance, and focuses passion. Its yellow-orange color corresponds with the solar plexus chakra and boosts the relationship to the inner self, in particular, it fosters self-esteem and self-respect. Citrine has an all-around sunny disposition and radiates that kind of positive power to its holder and especially to Geminis, Aries, Libras, and Leos. Get your glow on.

Rose Quartz

Rose quartz is one of the quintessential stones of any crystal collection. The millennial pink stone attracts kindness, compassion, and romance. It’s primarily associated with Taurus and Libra, two signs ruled by the planet Venus, and the heart chakra. Rose quartz is a lot more than love, however. It balances, heals, and rejuvenates all emotions. In particular, it cools hot tempers, clearing anger, guilt, and jealousy while encouraging compassion and harmony.

Rose Quartz
Turquoise

Turquoise is one of the most recognizable crystals in everyday wear. Its signature blue-green color is in tune with the throat chakra, which rules communication, expression, and creativity. Turquoise enhances your speech and storytelling abilities while complementing your inner creative well. Place the crystal in a studio or workspaces for a boost of artistic energy. Turquoise vibes well with Sagittarius, Pisces, and Scorpio, but compliments any sign.

Amethyst

The deep violet color of amethyst makes this crystal one of the most beautiful. Commonly associated with Aquarius, Pisces, Virgo, and Capricorn, amethyst is attuned to moments of transformation in one’s life and boosts connections to one’s spirit and intuition. It also wards off nightmares and offers a sense of mental clarity to its holder, generally improving cerebral thought as it rules the third eye chakra. Amethyst has a powerful calming and peaceful influence that makes it one of the best meditative crystals out there.

Amethyst
Selenite
Selenite

This milky white crystal is associated with the sign Cancer and the crown chakra, which rules consciousness, wisdom, and bliss. Named after the Greek goddess of the moon, selenite thwarts negativity and fosters alignment between the physical, spiritual, and the mental. The crystal is often tumbled into smooth, round stones but can be found in its original wand-like form. Placing selenite in the home or on the person fosters an environment that’s fit for spiritual growth.
