Virginie Viard brought her own voice to Chanel's Spring/Summer 2022 Haute Couture collection.

Calling back to the brand's <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion-week/chanel-haute-couture-spring-summer-2021-family-virginie-viard" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Spring/Summer 2021 Haute Couture collection</a>, Chanel's Spring/Summer 2022 Haute Couture show opened with brand ambassador and noted horsewoman Charlotte Casiraghi riding down the runway on horseback. In past seasons, Viard relied heavily on <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/chanel-resort-2022-collection-virginie-viard" target="_blank" rel="noopener">punk inspirations</a>. However, this year, the designer clung to some of the fashion house's more traditional sartorial codes as the anchor for her interpretations.
When you think of Chanel, you think of a structured tweed jacket and skirt, but Viard prefers to play with movement. A-line garments were abutted with feather details and chiffon accents. Trousers with matching jackets present slit sides and new palazzo silhouettes, while one pair is made up entirely of feathers.&nbsp;
No, it was not the gut-punching fashion of <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/fashion/remembering-karl-lagerfeld" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Karl Lagerfeld</a>, but, instead, Viard offered her own ode to the Chanel legacy. One garment recreates the tweed pattern with sequins, while another features the same technique mimicking a patchwork of different pastel tweeds.
As the show progressed, eveningwear became the clear winner. From ethereal white and pastel gowns to darker, deconstructed styles, the collection featured a number of ensembles that grabbed the audience's attention for their amalgamation of fragile and rigid, demure and sexy. Even some of the more punk-leaning outfits incorporated sheer materials to balance out the upscale grunge aesthetic.
For the collection's final look, audience members were treated to a silk and chiffon wedding gown with jeweled detailing on the straps and neckline. The angelic garb contrasted the show's opening look, a black tweed jacket with jeweled buttons, demonstrating the two ends of a spectrum the Viard toiled between throughout the collection.
