14 Celebrity Brides Who Didn't Wear White on Their Wedding Days
Something old, something new, something borrowed and something...pink?
Celebrities rarely play by the rules, and that goes for their weddings, too. The days of solely pure white wedding gowns seem to be over, and some of the world's most notable names prove it. This movement away from conventional means of celebrating romantic unions isn't entirely new, though. Hollywood starlets like Elizabeth Taylor stunned the public eye after debuting different colored wedding dresses back in the late '60s.
Luckily for her, having eight different weddings meant leaving an everlasting mark on bridal dressing. In the 21st century, many recognizable figures followed suit. From Emily Ratajkowski's yellow pantsuit to Sarah Jessica Parker's black gown, it is clear that some of the best conjugal looks are the ones that skip out on tradition. Here, take a look at 14 celebrities who dared to add color to their wedding dresses.
Marilyn Monroe
Miss Marilyn Monroe wed three times, and her second marriage was to baseball player Joe DiMaggio. Their tumultuous married life began with a San Francisco courthouse wedding in 1953, to which Monroe wore a black jacket with a white fur collar and a pencil skirt.
Elizabeth Taylor
In 1964, Elizabeth Taylor married Richard Burton (for the first time), and stunned in this Irene Sharaff ensemble. The actress proved that she was clearly ahead of her time when she walked down the aisle in this buttercup yellow look.
Audrey Hepburn
While we've all seen Audrey Hepburn don some stunning bridal looks in the movies, the star opted for a pared-down, pale-pink Givenchy dress for her wedding to Dr. Andrea Dotti in 1969.
Sarah Jessica Parker
The lines between Sarah Jessica Parker and Carrie Bradshaw seem to be perpetually blurred. When SJP married Matthew Broderick she rocked this black Morgane Le Fay ruffled gown, a choice that certainly ruffled some feathers at the time.
Gwen Stefani
In 2002, Gwen Stefani married Gavin Rossdale while wearing a Christian Dior gown designed by John Galliano. The dress still honored the tradition of wearing white on your wedding day, but the dip-dyed, hand-painted, hot pink bottom half gave the gown a very Stefani-esque edge.
Julianne Moore
Julianne Moore kept it simple for her 2003 nuptials to director Bart Freundlich with this stunning purple Prada moment. Moore's daughter, Liv Freundlich, was just a baby when her parents tied the knot, and was able to appear in some adorable photo-ops.
Jessica Biel
When marrying Justin Timberlake in 2012, Jessica Biel walked down the isle in this blush pink Giambattista Valli gown. Discussing the inception of the dress in an interview with Elle, Biel said, "It was a bit of a leap of faith at the time, but it turned out better than I could have ever imagined. [Putting it on], I felt like I had made the right choice. I felt elegant. And it moved like a dream.”
Keira Knightley
The beautiful Keira Knightley kept her wedding with James Righton under wraps when they came together in 2013, but her stunning non-traditional look could not be kept a secret. This mini, light pink, dress was designed by Chanel. In fact, it wasn't the first or last time the actress wore the dress, as she attended the 2008 BAFTA party in it and then selected it again for a December 2013 event.
Kristen Bell
Kristen Bell and Dax Shephard tied the knot at a Los Angeles courthouse in 2013. For the emotional day, Bell opted for a simple black dress with a chunky necklace, showing her look in a throwback photo that captures the couple's hilarious dynamic. The actress told The Knot that they spent a grand total of $147 for their low-key wedding.
Emily Ratajkowski
In true Emrata fashion, this yellow two-piece suit broke the internet when Sebastian Bear-McClard put a ring on it in a New York City courthouse. This alternative for a voluminous white dress was from, wait for it...Zara. When discussing her choice to wear a suit in an interview with Vanity Fair, Ratajkowski said, "I never loved the idea of wearing white for a wedding because I'm not a pure woman. I'm a woman with a lot of character and experience and life. I also just loved the idea of a suit, especially at City Hall because it's like you're taking care of business. I really wanted to wear red actually, initially... and then I just loved mustard yellow and just knew it was the one."
Mandy Moore
When Mandy Moore married musician Taylor Goldsmith in 2018 she was clad in a stunning custom pink Rodarte gown. When asked why she didn't wear a white gown, Moore told People, “it just doesn’t feel the most me.”
Priyanka Chopra Jonas
The grand affair that was Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra's multi-day wedding featured a number of bridal looks, including this custom red lehenga choli by Sabyasachi. Chopra wore this vibrant set for the couple's second wedding ceremony that honored the bride's Hindu traditions.
Chloë Sevigny
Actress Chloë Sevigny and art dealer Siniša Mačković got married in a March 9, 2020 ceremony that the couple kept under wraps for a whole year. Sharing a picture from their special day on their first wedding anniversary, Sevigny revealed that she went a non-traditional route in a fitted black dress, tights, and ankle boots, topped with a white veil. Sevigny was pregnant with her and Mačković's son, Vanja Sevigny Mačković, at the time of the wedding.
Christine Quinn
Selling Sunset star Christine Quinn dressed as a Gothic Barbie as she said "I do" to her beau Christian Richard. The dramatic black dress matched the gothic, winter-wonderland-themed wedding ceremony, and was designed by Galia Lahav. It's not easy to pull off such a statement bridal dress, much less make it luxurious — but like everything she wears, Quinn was more than able to pull it off.
