The Drop Waist is Making a Comeback
Whether it was at fashion week in New York, Paris, London, or Milan, the drop waist silhouette is one trend we've seen nonstop this season.
With mom jeans and similar high-waisted styles on the out, the ultra-low, Y2K-esque waistline has returned to the spotlight in all forms—jeans, skirts, and dresses alike. In response to the sudden resurgence of this dramatically lower waistline, the Spring/Summer 2024 runways worldwide have gone even lower and offered the drop waist.
With a drop waist style, the garment is fitted much lower, usually falling around the hips rather than the waist, creating the illusion of a longer torso and a more accentuated hourglass figure, which is just one reason why the style has been a favorite among designers this season.
Although the drop waist has been slowly inching back into the spotlight for months, with standout moments earlier this year on style icons like Kendall Jenner, Jennifer Lawrence, and Anne Hathaway, it had a huge presence during fashion weeks around the world, especially making itself known in New York and Paris, at shows like Khaite, Sandy Liang, and Marni, among many others. The influence of the drop waist has surpassed the runways though, as seen on celebrities like Phoebe Dynevor, Kylie Jenner, and Julia Garner, surely marking a big return for the trend. See some of our favorite drop waist looks from the runways as well as guests attending the shows at various fashion weeks for inspiration on how to style this trend.
