Princess Diana's Wedding Dress is Going on Display
For a limited time, the gown will be part of a royal fashion exhibit at Kensington Palace.
If you've ever wanted the opportunity to see Princess Diana's wedding dress up close, get ready to pack your bags for a summer vacation across the pond. Starting June 3, the iconic 1981 gown will be on display at Kensington Palace, the late princess's former home, as a part of the “Royal Style in the Making" exhibit which “explores the fine art of designing for royalty." Looking back at the wardrobes of “three generations of royal women,” the palace explains, each individual look “helped shape the public image of the British monarchy and propelled the British fashion industry onto the global stage.”
While many remember the gown or its iteration in the most recent season of The Crown, it has not been available for public viewing at Kensington Palace since 1995. However, both Prince William and Prince Harry signed off on the dress being lent to Historic Royal Palaces for the show.
The collection includes rare archival pieces, designer sketches, fabric swatches, and never-before-seen pictures, as well as some of the more famous royal pieces from the 19th century. Alongside Princess Di's wedding dress, a preserved coronation gown toile from 1937, worn by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother (a.k.a. Queen Elizabeth II's mother and the wife of King George VI).
Both gowns and more will be on display in the “Royal Style in the Making" exhibit at Kensington Palace from June 3, 2021 to Jan 2, 2022.
