Solange's Style Evolution
In honor of the multi-talented icon’s 37th birthday, we’re taking a look back at Solange’s style evolution over the years and commemorating her best looks.
If ever there was an expert at using fashion as a means to express one’s individuality, it would be Solange. The singer/songwriter/performance artist has long expressed herself through her ebullient style, making a name for herself throughout her career not only for her dexterous musicality but also for her distinctive sartorial presence.
A pro at all things pattern play, Solange’s evolution in dress is one that has been accompanied by a discernible increase in self-assuredness and confidence. Soon enough, Solange went from being notorious for her monochromatic savvy (which was impressive in itself) to masterful incorporations of 3D textured knits and bold structural statements in not only her day-to-day wardrobe but also that of her music videos, many of which are known for their unique artistry and thought-provoking imagery and narratives.
Solange’s 2016 album, Seat at the Table, garnered the multi-hyphenate her first Grammy win for best R&B single for “Cranes in the Sky,” which coincidentally also had one of the standout music videos of the album. In her videos for “Cranes in the Sky” and "Don’t Touch My Hair,” the style maven wove narratives of the Black experience while donning geometric and avant-garde garments by brands such as The Row, Acne Studios, and even designs by fashion students attending Central Saint Martins, the prestigious design school in London from which a succession of reputable designers have emerged, including Alexander McQueen and John Galliano.
Not only has Solange been dressed by reputable designers like Gucci, Thom Browne, and Jacquemus, but the fashion Hall of Famer has also founded a multidisciplinary company of her own, Saint Heron, which showcases the work of artists and designers through online exhibitions.
Throughout her time in the limelight, Solange has made a name for herself with her inventive style and virtuosity. To celebrate her 37th birthday, L’OFFICIEL highlights Solange’s ever-adapting fashion.
