10 Nominated Shows to Binge-Watch Before the 2021 Emmy Awards
From Ted Lasso to Bridgerton, catch up on these nominated series before the ceremony.
The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards will finally commence this Sunday on the Event Deck at L.A. Live. Hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, the Emmy Awards has an array of nominations this year, ranging from historical dramas to superhero dark comedies. HBO and HBO Max combined received 130 nominations in total, while Netflix received 129 and Disney+ secured 71 nominations.
Whether you want to laugh or shed some tears, here is a list of Emmy-nominated shows to watch before the ceremony airs.
The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards will air on Sept. 19th on CBS and Paramount Plus at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET.
Ted Lasso
Developed by and starring Jason Sudeikis, Ted Lasso is a sports comedy-drama series that focuses on Kansas football coach Ted Lasso and his experience coaching a professional British soccer team (even though he has no experience in coaching soccer). The hit series received 20 nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

Mare of Easttown
In this crime drama limited series, Mare of Easttown navigates through the life of detective Mare Sheehan (Kate Winslet) while she investigates a local murder in her hometown. As her life falls apart around her, Sheehan tries to find a way to balance her home and work life without succumbing to her past traumas and the tensions she faces with several members of her community. The HBO series earned 16 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Limited Series and Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

Hacks
The comedy-drama series focuses on the life of Las Vegas stand-up comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart). Determined to save her dying career, Vance teams up with television writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) in hopes of sprucing up her material and staying relevant in the public eye. With 15 nominations under its belt, including Jean Smart for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and Hannah Einbinder for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, Hacks has a substantial amount of stellar performances to watch throughout its first season.

The Crown
The Crown is a historical drama series that follows the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. In Season 4, the show introduced viewers to Princess Diana (Emma Corrin) and Margaret Thatcher (Gillian Anderson). With a staggering 24 nominations, The Crown is tied with The Mandalorian for the most Emmy nominations this year.

The Boys
Based on the comic series of the same name, The Boys is a superhero television series that focuses on the corrupt personas and actions of superpowered individuals and the vigilantes who try to stop them. The Boys secured five nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.

Pose
From creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Steven Canals, Pose is set in New York City during the '80s and '90s. Starring Billy Porter, Mj Rodriguez, Indya Moore, and Dominique Jackson, the drama series conveys the African American and Latino ballroom culture of New York City, the height of the AIDS pandemic, and the complicated lives and relationships between the show's main characters. Pose recently won three Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Saturday night for its final season, and actress Mj Rodriguez made history as the first transgender performer to be nominated in a lead acting category.
Bridgerton
In this period drama series based on the novels by Julia Quinn, Bridgerton transports audiences into Regency-era London. Filled with romance, scandals, and a diverse cast, the Netflix series received 12 Emmy nominations for its first season.

The Mandalorian
In the hit space Western series set in the Star Wars universe, The Mandalorian follows the journey of Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), a lone bounty hunter who travels throughout the galaxy. While trying to protect the child Grogu, Din—also known as “the Mandalorian”—encounters multiple enemies while on the run. The Mandalorian leads with 24 nominations alongside The Crown. This includes nominations for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

The Queen's Gambit
Based on the 1983 novel by Walter Trevis, The Queen’s Gambit revolves around orphan and chess prodigy Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy). Determined to become one of the world’s greatest chess players, Harmon competes around the world in chess tournaments while making new friends and battling addictions along the way. The Queen’s Gambit received 18 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Limited Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.

Cobra Kai
Decades after the story of the Karate Kid franchise, Cobra Kai follows the adult lives of Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio). When Lawrence and LaRusso decide to open competing martial arts dojos, they find themselves reigniting their old rivalry from when they were teenagers. The series is nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series at this year's Emmy Awards.
