Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo Tapped for 'Wicked' Film Adaptation
Pink and green never looked so good.
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are headed to the land of Oz in the upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked.
Directed by Jon M. Chu (the same figure behind the recent In the Heights film), the project star Grande as the pink and bubbly Glinda alongside Erivo as the green and talented Elphaba. As a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, the original musical tells the story of the two young witches who would later become the Good Witch of the North and the Wicked Witch of the East, respectively. Grande and Erivo will take over the roles originated by Broadway powerhouses Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel.
While there's no word on who has been cast as the other major characters like Fiyero or The Wonder Wizard of Oz, it will be hard to find players to match the talent of these two.
Grande has established herself as a world-renowned pop star with multiple chart-topping singles and albums as well as an actress for her roles in the Nickelodeon shows Victorious and Sam & Cat. In her early years, she began her entertainment career in the Broadway musical 13 before later harnessing her musical theater talents in the 2016 TV special Hairspray Live!
Erivo recently starred as Aretha Frankin in the anthological period drama Genius. She also starred in the Broadway revival of The Color Purple, for which she won a Daytime Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award, making her one award short of an EGOT.
