'Euphoria' Stars Sydney Sweeney and Alexa Demie in the Running for Madonna Biopic
An inside look at the actresses up for the role of the Queen of Pop.
Pop icon and "material girl" Madonna is currently finding the perfect match for her upcoming biopic. From Oscar-winning actresses to indie music artists, several artists have gone through the "grueling" casting process, which includes singing auditions, hour-long choreography sessions, and readings with the star herself.
Carmen Cuba, the casting director for the biopic, has a history of finding diamonds in the rough (her talents include finding the extraordinary Stranger Things cast), so the upcoming film is in capable hands.
Alexa Demie, who plays the glamorous Maddy Perez on Euphoria, is among the running for the role, as is actress Sydney Sweeney who plays Cassie Howard on the Emmy-winning HBO show.
Little Women and Black Widow star Florence Pugh has also reportedly auditioned for the role already and is up against the likes of Julia Garner (Inventing Anna, Ozark) and British actress Emma Laird (Mayor of Kingstown).
Several indie artists have also tried out, including alternative singer Sky Ferreira, whose previous acting work includes Baby Driver and The Twilight Zone. Singer-songwriter Bebe Rexha (Happiest Season) has also auditioned.
While it's unusual for the subject of a biopic to also be a co-writer and director of their own biopic, Madonna told Jimmy Fallon why it was so crucial for her to be involved in the process. "The reason I'm doing it is because a bunch of people have tried to write movies about me, but they're always men," she said last October. Amy Pascal of Sony Pictures, who most recently worked on the Spider-Man trilogy, is the producer of the upcoming biopic. Along with the "Express Yourself" singer, Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody and Erin Cressida Wilson (The Girl on the Train) are set to co-write the film.
The lucky actress chosen for this once-in-a-lifetime role can expect to enroll in "Madonna Bootcamp" for several months as they learn the setlist and choreography for the iconic 1990 Blonde Ambition tour, the subject of the film.
