Filming on Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie' Movie to Begin in 2022
Gerwig is set to direct the Suicide Squad actress in a new film about the beloved Barbie doll.
The rumors are true: almost three years ago, Margot Robbie was confirmed as the future actress to play the iconic Barbie doll in a live-action film, and now the project is finally taking shape. According to Variety, filming is scheduled to begin in 2022 and the movie will be released the following year.
Early iterations of the script have evolved heavily as many writers, directors, and cast members have been joined and left the project since its announcement in 2015. While the definitive plot has not been fully explained, the publication has revealed that Greta Gerwig has been announced as the project's director and co-writer. Since transitioning from an actress to more off-screen work, Gerwig has found great success with her two directorial projects, Lady Bird and Little Women, both of which received several Academy Award nominations.
In an interview with British Vogue, Robbie discussed the upcoming film. "[Barbie] comes with a lot of baggage! And a lot of nostalgic connections," explained the actress. "But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People usually hear 'Barbie' and think, 'I know what movie it's going to be,' and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing, and they're like, 'Oh, well, maybe I don't…'"
Alongside Gerwig, her partner Noah Baumbach will be co-writing the script, so fans can already look forward to an incredible narrative from the duo. In addition to starring in the film, Robbie will serve as an executive through her production company LuckyChap, alongside names like Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara.
