His adaptation of Homer's epic tale boasts a star-studded cast, set to release in 2026.

Christopher Nolan's next cinematic project is underway as&nbsp;The Odyssey&nbsp;has begun production. Confirmation of Nolan tackling Homer's epic tale came in December 2024, following the success of his feature film Oppenheimer (2024). The critically acclaimed film <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/film-tv/oscars-2024-all-the-winners-full-list" target="_blank" rel="noopener">won seven Oscars</a> at the 96th Annual Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Lead Actor, Best Score, and Best Director.&nbsp;
Set for a summer 2026 theatrical release,&nbsp;The Odyssey&nbsp;is currently filming in Morocco and Sicily, Italy. The epic poem was written in the eighth century BCE, and now, Nolan is adapting the Greek tale for the first time using new IMAX film technology.&nbsp;
To be sure, the classic epic has been adapted numerous times throughout Hollywood history, with notable projects including&nbsp;The Return&nbsp;(2024) and Ulysses&nbsp;(1954). With a $250 million budget,&nbsp;The Odyssey&nbsp;will mark Nolan's most expensive film project to date, and it lends extensive technological capabilities to the story.&nbsp;
&ldquo;There&rsquo;s a bit of everything in it. I mean, it truly contains all stories," Nolan told <a href="https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/christopher-nolan-the-odyssey-epic-to-end-all-epics-cn-exclusive/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Esquire</a> earlier this year."As a filmmaker, you&rsquo;re looking for gaps in cinematic culture, things that haven&rsquo;t been done before. And what I saw is that all of this great mythological cinematic work that I had grown up with &ndash; Ray Harryhausen movies and other things &ndash; I&rsquo;d never seen that done with the sort of weight and credibility that an A-budget and a big Hollywood, IMAX production could do.&rdquo;
The ancient Greek epic follows the story of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, on a treacherous expedition home after the Trojan War. Odysseus' perilous journey depicts the hero's journey archetype as the titular character encounters dangerous mythological creatures like Polyphemus the Cyclops, Sirens, Calypso, the nymph, and Circe, the Greek witch goddess. Once he overcomes the hurdles, Odysseus returns home to his wife Penelope, but he faces another challenge: he must rid Ithaca of the suitors and take back his kingdom.&nbsp;
The film features high-profile Hollywood actors. The all-star cast includes Matt Damon, <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/tags/tom-holland" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tom Holland</a>, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Benny Safdie, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, and <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/tags/zendaya" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Zendaya</a>, who recently <a href="https://www.instagram.com/voguemagazine/p/DHwE34LNgvV/?img_index=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">touched down in Italy</a> to begin filming. Other supporting cast features Himesh Patel, Elliott Page, Bill Irwin, Jesse Garcia, Will Yun Lee, and Samantha Morton.&nbsp;
The highly regarded director is reuniting with Damon, Hathaway, Safdie, Patel, Page, and Irwin as he's collaborated with them in the past on films including Interstellar&nbsp;(2014) and&nbsp;The Dark Knight&nbsp;(2012). For many of the other actors, this will mark their first time working with the Oscar-winning director.&nbsp;
