There's no doubt about it- when it comes to fashion show soundtracks, there's one man who has dominated the space, creating an auditory language to complement designers' collections. That's why we asked sound designer Michel Gaubert, who currently resides in Paris, to choose his top tracks that give him the feeling of home.
Rita Mitsouka "Marcia Baila"
They were the ultimate French band: They wore Jean Paul Gaultier and had the best videos.
Serge Gainsbourg
There are too many tracks to mention- his music followed me everywhere and still follows me. He was a unique person that paved the way for so many others.
Isabelle Adjani "Beau Oui Comme Bowie"
Isabelle is the French movie icon we all know, and Serge Gainsbourg produced the track.
Étienne Daho "Tombé Pour La France"
Étienne Daho, one of the original French new wavers, was the soundtrack of my summers on the French Atlantic coast.
The Rolling Stones "Jumping Jack Flash"
It reminds me of St. Tropez: My dad would always have it playing full blast in the car when I was little.
The B-52's "Rock Lobster"
This is a modal window.
Another summer favorite from back in 1979, when I was in the south of France with friends and we would dance with our claws.
Daft Punk "Da Funk"
I played this at Chanel couture when it was just a promo, after having seen them do an amazing DJ set.
Cerrone "Supernature"
This is a modal window.
Probably the best French disco track. I recently reheard it when I watched Gaspar Noé's Climax.
Dimitri from Paris Sacrebleu
This whole album is all the way French- and I started my work with Karl Lagerfeld in a collaboration with Dimitri from Paris.
Prince "Sign O' the Times"
This is a modal window.
"In France, a skinny man died of a big disease with a little name": The lyrics are so powerful, and it came out in 1987 at the height of the disease. I saw that tour in Paris, and it still blows my mind. Everyone knows that Prince had a love affair with France.
