Tinashe returns with a new trap-influenced track “No Drama” featuring Offset, the Migos rapper famously engaged to Cardi B. It's the kind of club-primed track that proves why Tinashe deserves a place in the pantheon of current pop stars. One can already imagine the choreography-heavy music video that's to come with it.
It’s been a year since new music from Tinashe, and two since her album Nightride in 2016. That year was particularly tough for the singer, who claimed that her label, RCA Records, wasn’t supporting her work.
While Tinashe’s label woes have made her career trajectory unclear at times, what has remained consistent is her ability to turn out incredible pop music. “No Drama” is no different. The track comes as part of a trio of singles, with “Me So Bad,” and “Faded Love” on the way.
Unfortunately for Tinashe, despite what her song might suggest, there is drama — at least for Offset. The rapper has come under fire from the LGBT community and their allies — which make up a significant percentage of Tinashe’s fanbase — for a different guest verse on YFN Lucci’s track “Boss Life.” There he raps “I don’t vibe with the queers,” which is confusing considering the gay designers he wears on a regular basis. The song that made him famous, “Versace,” references the late Gianni Versace, who was openly gay.
For his defense, Offset posted a statement on Instagram stories saying that people misinterpreted him, that he’s not homophobic and that he works with “gays…all the time at events dealing with fashion.” It’s hard not to draw a parallel between his statement and the popular rebuttal for racism: “I have black friends.”
Here is hoping that Tinashe’s next two singles are problematic free. She deserves that.
