Caitlyn Jenner is Running for California Governor
In an interesting turn of events, Caitlyn Jenner, a former Olympic decathlete, has announced her plan to replace Democratic Governor, Gavin Newsom, in a recall election. Jenner is outwardly a Republican, which comes as a surprise in a deep-blue state such as California, but she has not explicitly aligned herself, or her campaign, with the previous U.S. President, Donald Trump. However, Jenner has shown her support for Trump in recent years, which will prove to be a obstacle within this race. Her son-in-law and 2020 presidential candidate Kanye West has also shown support for the former POTUS.
In preparation for her run, Jenner has assembled a team that includes Tony Fabrizio, the top pollster on Donald Trump's 2016 and 2020 campaigns, Ryan Erwin, founder of RedRock Strategies, and Tyler Deaton, president of Allegiance Strategies. She has also contracted the help of several other Trump-related officials, which could be something that Californians take issue with.
In Jenner's words, the race is "totally winnable." In a public statement, one of her advisors said that she is "running as someone that's socially liberal and fiscally conservative." If Newsom is ousted via the recall election, Jenner will go on to run against other republican and democratic candidates that similarly want the powerful position.
In her official statement Jenner said, "Sacramento needs an honest leader with a clear vision[...] for the past decade, we have seen the glimmer of the Golden State reduced by one-party rule that places politics over progress and special interests over people."
