This Celebrity Church is Anti-LGBTQ and Ellen Page Isn't Here For it

Frankly, neither are we.

Ellen Page, who appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert earlier this week to share her feelings about the atrocious hate crime committed against Empire star Jussie Smullet, had a few words for Chris Pratt and his involvement in the anti-LGBTQ Hillsong Church. In a separate appearance on The Late Show, Pratt discussed his new engagement to Katherine Schwarzenegger, as well as his participation in a fast inspired by the Book of Daniel, which he was “inspired” to take up after learning of the fast through his Pastor.

In response to the interview, Page tweeted, “Oh. K. Um. But his church is infamously anti lgbtq so maybe address that too?" Although the Hillsong Church has recently come under fire for its discriminatory practices, the trendy establishment is perhaps best known for the celebrities that patronize it, such as Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber.

In 2015, Hillsong’s global pastor, Brian Houston, released a statement about the Christian church’s controversial exclusionary policies, writing, “I do believe God’s word is clear that marriage is between a man and a woman. Hillsong Church welcomes ALL people but does not affirm all lifestyles. Put clearly, we do not affirm a gay lifestyle and because of this we do not knowingly have actively gay people in positions of leadership, either paid or unpaid. I recognise this one statement alone is upsetting to people on both sides of this discussion, which points to the complexity of the issue for churches all over the world."

Page’s emotional speech about the current administration’s disregard for LGBTQ safety and humanity left Colbert and the audience speechless, closing with the impassioned words, “This needs to fucking stop.”
