The "What Was That" singer got candid about her gender identity journey in a tell-all interview ahead of her 2025 album.

Being unconventional is a familiar concept to <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/tags/lorde" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lorde</a>; now she revealed she's adding gender identity to that beautiful unconventionality.
As she prepares for the upcoming release of her first album since 2021, which is already titled <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/music/lorde-new-album-songs-what-was-that-details-release-date-listen" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Virgin</a>, the "What Was That" singer sat down for an <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/lorde-gender-dentity-interview-1235339017/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a>&nbsp;and got candid about broadening and deepening her understanding of gender identity and where she finds herself on the spectrum.
Lorde shared that she confided in her friend, Grammy-winning artist <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/tags/chappell-roan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chappell Roan</a>, about how she perceives her identity before she was ready to open up to the rest of the world about her gender identity. The New Zealand native expressed that her relationship with gender has shifted. Lorde reportedly told the "Good Luck, Babe" singer, "I'm a woman except for the days when I'm a man."
Lorde acknowledged that this response might frustrate or confuse people, but that there's a part of her that refuses to be categorized or simplified for the benefit of others. She explained to the publication that she still identifies as a cisgender woman and uses "she" and "her" pronouns, but that she's still navigating through gender fluidity, which Rolling Stone&nbsp;says heavily inspired&nbsp;Virgin.&nbsp;She recognized that her experience with gender identity isn't as complex or "radical" as people within the transgender community or those who identify as nonbinary.
"I see these incredibly brave young people, and it's complicated," she said in her Rolling Stone interview. "Making the expression privately is one thing, but I want to make very clear that I'm not trying to take any space from anyone who has more on the line than me. Because I'm, comparatively, in a very safe place as a wealthy, cis, white woman."
The 28-year-old finds herself "in the middle gender-wise" and has become comfortable and confident in who she is as a result of unrestricting herself from gender expression.&nbsp;
Lorde rose to stardom in 2013 after the release of her hit debut single "Royals" from her debut studio album Pure Heroin.&nbsp;The song topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at No.1 and won two Grammy awards for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance in 2014. The past few years have been transformative for the pop singer, and her new album will reveal more on her journey upon its release on June 27.
Lorde also announced that she'll be going on a 38-stop <a href="https://www.lofficielusa.com/music/lorde-2025-tour-dates-new-album">world tour</a>, "Ultrasound World Tour," kicking off this September.&nbsp;
