See Meghan Markle's Cryptic Return to Instagram

If Meghan Markle's New Year's resolution is to be more active on social media, she's off to a strong start. She is officially back on Instagram.

Until New Year's Day 2025, the Duchess of Sussex hadn't posted on the platform since 2020. Coming back from this multiyear hiatus, she shared a semi-cryptic video of herself, clad in an airy white outfit, running towards the ocean and writing "2025" in the sand before running out of the frame. Prince Harry reportedly shot the video, which garnered 4.3 million views on @meghan less than 24 hours after it went live.

Markle's Instagram repertoire spans multiple accounts as both a celebrity actress and a royal. The former Suits star deactivated her personal Instagram (@meghanmarkle) in 2018 weeks before her wedding to marry Prince Harry. In 2019, the joint account @sussexroyal launched as a page both for the Duke and the Duchess, but it was inactive by 2020 when the couple was actively stepping back from their royal roles.

Since March of 2020, Markle has mostly been off the app. She announced the debut of her homeware and preserves company @americanrivieraorchard in March 2024 on Instagram, but even that page has been quiet since. While the comments have been turned off on Markle's inaugural post under @meghan, users on X (formerly Twitter) have expressed their emotions from excitement to confusion regarding the video that gives little context into what's to follow for Markle. 

Though the star has been vocal about the dangers of social media and the bullying she's experienced on various platforms, it seems her return has been brewing for some time now. Allison P. Davis profiled Markle for The Cut in 2022 and reported the royal teased something then. "I’m getting back … on Instagram," Markle told The Cut, says, with eyes "alight and devilish," per Davis. In due time, Markle's new presence will become more clear.
