A Millennial Pink Supermoon Will Light Up the Sky Tonight
It is a phenomenon as it rarely exists: today, April 7th, a pink "Super Moon" will be visible to the naked eye in the sky. An event that occurs when the full moon coincides with the perigee, or is at a minimum distance from Earth. Tonight into tomorrow, the pink moon will be a mere 357,000 km from the earth. Under these conditions, the star can appear 7 to 14% larger than usual and up to 30% brighter. Hence the term "Super Moon" which technically, has no scientific value.
Tonight, the full moon of April, the first after the spring equinox, is traditionally called "pink" in reference to the appearance of spring flowers of cherry trees or phlox stolonifera, with a pinkish tint. However, contrary to what its nickname suggests, the full pink moon does not appear pink but rather sports a very orange or even reddish color.
