Over the weekend, celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee kicked off, commemorating her 70 years at the helm of the crown (the first monarch to reach this impressive mark). While the festivities in her honor look back on her lengthy reign, the Queen is already looking ahead to the future.

In an official statement, the monarch expressed her desire for Prince Charles to be crowned as King after her death, dispelling any notions about passing her son in favor of her grandson Prince William. The Queen also said that she believed Camilla Parker Bowles, Charles' wife, should receive the title of Queen Consort when he takes the throne.

"And when, in due course, my son Charles becomes King, I know that you will give him and his wife, Camilla, the same support you have given me. And it is my sincere wish that when the time comes, Camilla will be known as the Queen Consort as she continues her loyal service," Elizabeth announced in the statement.

Due to the tumultuous start of their relationship, Charles and Camilla's marriage was considered quite scandalous, especially after Princess Diana, the Prince's first wife, confirmed her husband's affair with Camilla while she and Charles were still married.

After Charles and Diana's divorce, Camilla was viewed unfavorably in the public sphere. When she married Charles in 2005, it was announced that she would never have the title of Queen Consort but Princess Consort, despite having the right guaranteed by royal law. In the time since, Camilla's popularity has grown in popular opinion, now allowing her to receive the necessary approval to become Queen.
