Carla Bruni and Fran Summers Star in Riccardo Tisci's First Burberry Holiday Campaign
Riccardo Tisci has been at the helm of Burberry for a few seasons now. Slowly but surely, he has melded his sensual vision with the house's British heritage, creating a varied wardrobe for the modern Londoner that was especially evident through his recent Spring 2020 collection, which featured a progression of over 100 looks that he titled "Evolution." Additionally, the likes of Gigi Hadid and Irina Shayk recently starred in his Fall 2019 campaign, wearing artful trench coats by the sea as a contrasting vision by Nick Knight captured models recording video around a studio.
From this, it's become clear that Tisci wants to display how Burberry can fit into different lifestyles and aesthetics, a theme that seems certain to come into much of his work moving forward. But though he's gotten into the nuances of what he wants to do as the chief creative officer, the Italian designer still had yet to explore a crucial element of running the brand: the holiday campaign.
Today, that all changes, as Tisci is ringing in the festive season by having Mert and Marcus capture a diverse cast of Burberry favorites. Some notable names include Carla Bruni (because what is a fashion campaign without an iconic '90s supermodel?), Fran Summers (who closed the Spring 2020 show), and a host of creatives and models including Mahmood, Ikram Abdi Omar, and Boychild. Celebrating the spirit of union, hope, and love that is tangible around the holidays, the campaign is set against a white background and features photos of the cast in cool and sensual poses—that hug that got the world excited with Tisci's first campaign makes a comeback—as well as a video in which they dance around to "What Is Love?" by Deee-Lite. There are ethereal ears and wings, there are Santa Clauses, and there are plenty of the reimagined heritage pieces that make this such an exciting new era for Burberry.
"I am connected to the idea of unity, togetherness and challenging the perception of what love is today," Tisci said of the concept behind the campaign. "This for me is the real spirit of the season. It’s one of my favorite times of the year – when I can stop, reflect and reconnect with those who make me feel happy and at home, no matter where I am in the world."
The new campaign is a hint at the excitement to come, both over the holiday season and throughout future developments for Tisci at Burberry. With established models and young creatives from a range of backgrounds coming together to celebrate, the imagery displays a lively new moment at the house.
