#Thneed is Trending on TikTok Thanks to the Rise of the Subversive Basics Trend
How a fictional clothing item from the world of Dr. Seuss has become linked to the real-life subversive basics trend thanks to TikTok.
Subversive basics were one of the top trends for fall 2021. Cut out garments and mesh were sported by fashion's elites, with brands such as Mugler pushing out subversive basic pieces. Now, TikTok has taken the subversive basic trend and added a fictional spin. #ThneedTok is a hashtag on the app that looks at DIY subversive basics and compares the look to Thneeds from Dr. Suess' The Lorax. As described by The Lorax, thneeds are garments created by the Oncler that can be worn in multiple ways. It can be worn as a shirt, a glove, a scarf, a pair of pants, etc.
Now labeled as "Thneed Girl" in her bio, user @racheleahx began commenting on and stitching TikToks of Thneed-like ways to wear clothes, and explained the fictional origins of the garment.
Like a Thneed, DIY subversive basics can be worn a lot of ways. People are turning tights into crop tops, or buying strips of fabrics that can be styled in 10 different ways to create different tops. Basic pieces that have more than one use are practical and give your closet a constant refresh, but are very similar to a thneed.
Here are eight ways that you can turn an article of clothing into a subversive basic, or should I say a thneed.
