Ana de Armas Opens Up about Her Biggest Struggle in Playing Marilyn Monroe for New Film
After a stunning performance in the 2019 film Knives Out, Ana de Armas is heading back to the silver screen for her next big role as Marilyn Monroe. However, according to the actress, preparing for the part was something of a challenge. In a recent interview with The Times, de Armas shared that learning Monroe's accent was "torture." She explained, "It only took me nine months of dialect coaching, and practicing, and some ADR [post-production recording of audio] sessions." The Cuban-Spanish star went on to say that the intense effort of mimicking Monroe's speech "fried" her brain.
The Monroe biopic, Blonde, is set to premiere on Netflix sometime this year. The film follows a fictional account of the late movie star's life, while still including Monroe's famous former lovers Arthur Miller, Joe DiMaggio, and President John F. Kennedy.
While a release date for Blonde has yet to be annouce, 2021 is looking to be a big year for de Armas. Her two other highly-anticipated films, Deep Water and No Time to Die, will debut in the latter half of the year. In Deep Water, the actress plays opposite her recent ex-boyfriend Ben Affleck as Melinda and Vic, a couple whose marital games lead to deadly consequences. The film also stars Jacob Elordi, Finn Wittrock, and Rachel Blanchard.
The James Bond flick No Time to Die will be the final installment under actor Daniel Craig's reign as the lead character. Playing Paloma, Agent 007's partner, de Armas described her character to The Hollywood Reporter as "very irresponsible...with the bubbliness of someone who is excited to be on a mission."
