A Documentary on Tina Turner is Coming to HBO Next Month
Next month, legendary Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll Tina Turner will be the subject of a new HBO-produced documentary on the musician’s life and lengthy career. The upcoming American-British film directed by Oscar-winning filmmakers Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin is the first authorized feature-length doc on the “Simply the Best” singer after the 1993 film What’s Love Got to Do with It, which drew from her 1986 autobiography, I,Tina, and starred Oscar-nominated actress Angela Bassett.
Drawing on a plethora of never-seen-before footage spanning 60 years, including audio tapes, personal photos, and the latest interviews with Turner herself, Tina anticipates an intimate and fresh look at the renowned icon in the latest teaser.
Before launching a successful career as a solo performer, Turner first rocketed to fame in the 1960s and 1970s when performing alongside her then-husband, Ike. The musical duo’s partnership turned violent off-stage, though the extent of the abuse didn’t come to surface until after the couple divorced and Tina started to speak publicly about her personal experiences. With interviews from Angela Bassett, Oprah Winfrey, and Turner’s current husband, Erwin Bach, among others, Tina will mostly feature the period of the artist’s solo career resurgence in the 1980s, which marked a new chapter of stardom that also translated into the film industry with an impressive appearance in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1985.
Tina will have its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in March 2021 and it is scheduled to be released in the United States on March 27, 2021 on HBO.
