Cher Invites Ukrainian Refugees to Stay in Her Homes
The singer is giving back and encouraging other people to do the same.
Cher has announced that she will house refugees from Ukraine in her home, due to the invasion led by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The action was announced by Cher on her Twitter. "I Would Like to Sponsor Ukrainian Families in My Home. They Would Be Safe & Cared For," she declared.
The 75-year-old pop diva has several properties in the United States, but usually spends most of her time in her mansion in Malibu, California. The singer also called on other people who have the means to adopt welcoming attitudes toward refugees. "MANY PEOPLE IN MY POSITION NEED TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE.IF I WAS ALONE OR WITH MY CHILDREN,& WE WERE TRAUMATIZED,I WOULD HOPE SOMEONE LIKE ME TO TAKE CARE OF US," she said.
It's estimated that more than two million people have already left Ukraine since the start of the invasion in late February.
In addition to Cher, other celebrities have condemned the war and provided aid to victims. Among them is Till Lindermann, lead singer of the band Rammstein, who helped to shelter a Ukrainian woman in Berlin. Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, who was born in Ukraine, have also raised $30 million for a humanitarian aid fund for the Ukrainian population.
Actor and former governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger also used his influence to send a message to Russian citizens. “I am speaking to you today because there are things that are happening in the world that have been hidden from you, terrible things that you should know. Let me tell you the truth about the war in Ukraine," he said.
The actor continued, “The destruction of Russian bombs raining down on innocent civilians has outraged the world so much that the strongest global economic sanctions ever taken have been imposed on your country… This is not the war to defend Russia like the one your grandparents or great-grandparents fought in. This is an illegal war."
