Everything We Know about Sky Ferreira's New Album 'Masochism'

The elusive star might actually drop her sophomore album soon.

Sky Ferreira dropped her archetypal debut studio album, Night Time, My Time in 2013. Since then, there have been rumors, whispers, and full-fledged conspiracy theories regarding her return to music, kept alive by stan accounts and internet hype, obsessed with Ferreira's elusiveness, unfulfilled promises of new music, and overall lack of public image. Then, in 2019, when it seemed like she would truly never make another song, Ferreira released her single "Downhill Lullaby," along with promises of an album later that year. That's when things got real.

Spoiler alert! There was no album that year! However, there was a Charli XCX collab on the song Cross You Out for XCX's album Charli, which, given the dried up plains of Ferreira's music in the last decade, was more than enough for her dedicated fans. Desperation ensued.

However, fans might actually get a new Sky Ferreira album—that is, if it isn't delayed by the Madonna biopic that she is supposedly in the running for. Here's everything we know about Masochism (announced in 2015, by the way) supposedly releasing soon.

October 2021

Although there should be a level of skepticism when receiving news from Instagram, fans often have to take what they can get. When Ferreira took to the platform to celebrate the 8th anniversary of Night Time, My Time, fans also got a first look at a release date for Masochism. She posted a story with a cryptic message, "NEW MUSIC RELEASE DATE CONFIRMED," and then added, "let's just say...uh...~it comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb~." This weather folklore is a reference to the month of March- the month beginning with bad weather, roaring like a lion, and ending with good weather, gentle like a lamb. March! March. We'll see.

December 2021

Stereogum released its list of most anticipated albums of 2022. Masochism is on there. Huh? There's a release date? Even having a year is something. But is it confirmed? Fans were hesitant until Ferreira took to Instagram, screenshotting the post, and adding "it happens every year but it's actually happening this time."

January 2022

Ferreira's mom, Tonia Lamere, then fueled fans with news of the album release, also on Instagram. A simple yet right to the point story, a photo of Ferreira with the text, "new album coming march." Simple, yet effective! Fans are still skeptical, however.

March 2022

And on the last day of the month, the biggest announcement yet was made. Although it wasn't an album, Ferreira dropped a teaser for (presumably) a single on her new album, and at this point, we will take anything we can get. She aptly captioned the teaser, "Remember me?" Yes! We do.

Although Ferreira did deliver on her promise of releasing something in March, it's not exactly what fans were hoping for, but the future seems bright. It seems the only thing left to do is wait and see, and until then, play "Everything Is Embarrassing" on a loop.
