Lady Gaga Masks Up in Custom Suffragette White Alaïa Ahead of Inauguration Day Performance
Arriving at the White House for her perfomance at President Joe Biden's inauguration, Lady Gaga kept warm in a custom Alaïa white wool coat and matching face mask. The chic pairing was shed when she sang the National Anthem, revealing a custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown with a gold dove pin, symbolizing peace.
Gaga wasn't the only one wearing suffragette white for the occasion. Jennifer Lopez, who also performed at the event, wore a frosty white Chanel ensemble. The all-white color palette holds symbolic meaning in American political fashion. As women in the 20th century campaigned for the right to vote, they wore white, going to marches and making their voices heard. Since then, the color has symbolized womens' political activism. When accepting her Vice Presidential nomination last year, Kamala Harris wore white as a nod to the suffragettes and female trailblazers in U.S. politics who came before her, like Shirley Chisholm.
Gaga also chose the symbolic color for arrival in Washington DC. The day before the inauguration, the Chromatica singer shared a picture of herself wearing a white Givenchy cape dress in the Capitol building.
The performer's meaningful fashion for the inauguration ceremony was also accompanied by a number of standout style choices from President Biden, Vice President Harris, and their respective families, proving once again that the political and sartorial go hand-in-hand.
